When it comes to nicer results, there really is no quick alternative to getting your layers on nice and smooth. for dark angels, if you want to use contrast paint, I'd choose a normal green paint, about a shade or two lighter than you want your armour to be. once youve got a smooth layer of this on, then apply your contrast paint. not in a thick layer but guided towards the darker areas of your model. this will add depth to your basecoat, and provide you shadow areas. from there you will need to bring up your highlights as normal, with thin layers of your base mixed with increasing amounts of a lighter tone.
