Jade Ossiarch Bonereapers

Hello fellow bones players,

I am just starting an Ossiarch army and I want to paint them partially or fully as jade. I am a reasonable skilled painter, but terrible with color theory and coordination. Anyone have success or thoughts on the best way to accomplish this? I suppose my first 3 ideas are:
1) skeletons as bone color with armor and weapons being jade
2) fully jade
3) jade skeletons with metal weapons

Thanks for any suggestions

#1 would give you the most available contrast between the light of the bones & the dark of the jade.

You could even do a drybrush that complements both colors to achieve an ethereal look to the bone & jade.

Re:Jade Ossiarch Bonereapers

I would definitely recommend using a combination of colors, for a few reasons.

Looking at the GW images of the models' various bone and armor sections, it's hard to tell what the designers/sculptors even intended to be one or the other, sometimes. Those aren't merely human skeletons wearing armor. Those are skeletal creatures partly made of armor-shaped bone (at least, visually - I don't follow AoS, so a quick google image search is all I have to go on). I don't know the lore, but being able to incorporate extra jade elements on what the official painted models show as bone could be a cool thematic element (not sure how much you care about making your own fluff), as well as being a way of introducing a bit of variety from model to model.

Perhaps more importantly, I think you're really going to want that contrast. There's a lot more going on with these sculpts than, say, older 40k Necrons, where a largely monochrome color scheme was not just the standard, but the intent. Even with those, the classic silver and black scheme really relied on the strong light and dark contrast, as well as having the accent color of the translucent green gauss rods.

Now, whether you'd prefer jade skeletons with a different material for their gear or bone skeletons with jade gear is entirely up to you. I could see either working. Do you have some fluffy reason? Do you just want to make them unique? How much do you like painting/looking at jade? Those sort of questions I couldn't begin to answer. Whether more than one material/color would look better, though? There, I do have an opinion. Take it for what little it's worth.

Thanks @racerguy, I like the idea of a contrast there.

@oadie, that is a really good question and I suppose the answer is that I like the look of a jade army, not necessarily wanting something unique. I had the idea from some jade immortals from Warmachine/Hordes that I loved. The only thing is they were built to look like statues, so I am worried that complete jade skeletons will look off somehow.

Hmmm... Without a clear leader in terms of concept, all I could offer is the suggestion to paint a test model or two. It's an extra expenditure of time and effort, but you can always go over what you don't like or simply strip it bare and start fresh. If you try one of each and post pictures, I'm sure Dakkanauts would be happy to weigh in on their preference, if you're still undecided, but I wouldn't be surprised if you had already made up your own mind, by that point. Admittedly not all that helpful, but it's the best I've got for you.

If you own the Ossiarch Bonereapers book, look at pages 67 and 70.

Page 67 under the "Blade Variants"(specifically, the second one which uses Incubi Darkness) shows what you're asking about.

Page 70 under "Armour Variants", look at "Null Myriad Green".

I would suggest using the Mortis Praetorians paint scheme, replacing the purple with the jade. You could also use the Petrifex Elite scheme, replacing the red with the jade and (maybe) replacing the gold with either a copper or a brighter bronze color.

Take a look at what shade of jade you want as well. The GW painting video Ghaz posted was useful, but too dark for my taste. As you can see below, jade is varied in shades.

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=jade%20&qs=n&form=QBIR&sp=-1&pq=jade%20&sc=8-5&sk=&cvid=82A3699D2F44489AAAB0451BA0A000EA

I disagree that the jade as shown in the Warhammer TV tutorial is too dark, as it will be replacing a dark purple in the Mortis Praetorians paint scheme

Jade Ossiarch Bonereapers

In Magic the Gathering the plane of Amonketh puts its inhabitants through five trials. The winner is honoured by being slayed by one of the gods, elmbalmed and sent into a portal to the afterworld.

When Nicole Bolas was reborn (main badguy) all of the creatures that had been sent into the afterworld returned. But they where covered in a blue black metall caled lapiz.

The backround story does not sound so far away from the Ossiarch bonereapers. And zombies and skeletons covered in lapez or jade sounds very cool.

Mtg has a lot of art, so there are many good pictures for inspiration of you want to google.

https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/6i7fl7/comment/dj411az
