Questions regarding primer spray vs acrylic spray paint

Hi all,
I'm currently collecting as much datas on how to paint minis because I'm planning in returning to hobby very soon after 20+ years,

I have a graffiti writing background (I've been painting for 15+ years, username checks out) but I'm reaching out to you guys to see if I can use classic spray paint instead of primer as I'm planning to use primed coat as base coat.

The brand I'm planning to use is Montana 94, which is an amazing spray paint brand,
I'm pretty sure that the minis are not going to melt but my main point is, does the waterbased / acrylic brush paint will stick to it ? -garbage GW primer from late 90's was basically a classic spray paint and never had issues IIRC-
Also, I believe that it will properly adhere to the mini's plastic but not 100% sure...

thanks for sharing your experiences, insights

Edit: Is there content on GW label for leadbelcher -Can't find it on the internet- ? if someone could share it or post a picture so I can compare that would be great!

Questions regarding primer spray vs acrylic spray paint

There's a very wide range of opinions on this matter, so don't be surprised if there isn't a clear right answer that emerges when multiple people reply!!

Paint adheres pretty well to plastic miniatures. I know plenty of people who don't use primer on plastic minis and have no issues. I usually prime (with an airbrush these days) but I have used just plain old acrylic paint as 'primer' and I haven't had any issues. Some people will die by the logic you HAVE to use primer and that primer makes a HUGE difference but in my experience I've not seen much evidence of that.

Resin and metal minis can be a little different however, and paint is much more likely to come off. Metal in particular can chip very easily, so a solid layer of actual primer is definitely important.

TL;DR if it's plastic you should be fine with spray paint. Resin or metal prime it 'properly'.

Questions regarding primer spray vs acrylic spray paint

Paint is not primer. They do different jobs. Many primers come in colors. I always prime first (in black is my preference).

Questions regarding primer spray vs acrylic spray paint

You can paint without primer. Sometimes a spray paint will work just like a primer. There really is no definite right or wrong. Just find whatever works for you.
