Can i use second edition space marines in games?

So I'm trying to get into warhammer 40k.
I bought the booklet with a singular marine, build it and primed it. I'm currently waiting on decent paint. Even before I primed my model I had already bought a cheap secondhand set from marktplaats. Within this 10 euro set i got 13 marines, with one made of metal. Any idea if this is a named character? I thought they were old because of the metal character, I then found the copyright year on the models which were 1991 and 1992. Not shown are two broken models that im glueing back together. The characters are a bit small, can I use them in games?

Other questions that I have are:
Who is the metal dude?
What collection or model does the ork car belong to?

Same as plastic. Clean it with alcohol (best idea, get old grease off). Undercoat (I use black matte acrylic in an airbrush, or actually Actie has a high-temp stove black paint that works very nicely as an undercoat. Be careful to shake well, very well, shake again, spray lightly in movements from side to side. Always start the paint sprying off to the side, do not bgin spraying directly onto the model... Wait to dry. Then, I will drybrush the entire model with thin layers of grey or white (or both, in that order). Then, I will paint with thin paints. Contrast paints work very well here, but most need to be thinned down 30-50% with contrast medium. Painting this way goes pretty fast.

Most of the size difference between that new marine and your old ones is due to the new one being a Primaris marine while your old guys are Firstborn - they have different rules and both are absolutely still legal and viable, and you can play them alongside each other.

Primaris have more wounds and a uniform weapons loadouts in all of their squads while Firstborn ("regular marines" ) usually allow more customization when it comes to that, like picking from a list of melee and ranged weapons for the squad leaders.

Primer and varnish after you have finished painting are probably the main things, as metal mini's tend to chip paint when dropped.

I learned to paint on metal mini's so my advice is probably backwards to modern technical methods. I would probably say contrast paints are probably not going to give great results, but I haven't tried them on a Metal mini to be sure, i suspect you'll need a lots of thin coats.

If you can get LA’s Totally Awesome you can strip the paint and start fresh. There are plenty of YouTube channels out there with practical painting advice to gain some confidence. A neatly painted model with a simple paint scheme is achievable with modest skill (I aim for neat and simple) and will look good on the tabletop as a gaming piece.

In your last pic, middle group back right guy is a 2nd edition push-fit flamer.

So it looks like your collections is:

Captain, combi melta, power axe
Sargent, bolt pistol chainsword
2 marines with flamers (special weapon)
2 marines with missile launchers (heavy weapon)
7 marines with bolters
Landspeeder (the gunner should have a multimelta or a heavy bolter)

Your basic marine tactical sqaud has 2 ways you want to run it.
5 man squad: 1 sarge, 3 basic bolters, 1 Heavy OR special weapon
10 man squad: 1 sarge, 7 basic bolters, 1 Heavy AND 1 special weapon. (you can’t double up in normal marine squads)

The metal guy is a captain (a headquarter choice) and a seperate unit from the tactical marines. Now you could run him as a sarge if you needed to (they can have the gear options of the model) but you need a guy to be leading your army anyway, and he’s who you have.

From what you have, your best bet is
Captain, c-melta, axe
10 man tac, ML/F
Land Speeder (you will need to find a gun for it)

With a spare ML and flamer marine to wait for reinforcements.

Yup. The Multimelta is an anti tank gun. It’s the one with the tanks, tubes and cylindrical barrels Heavy bolter is for shooting troops, it’s the one with the box magazine and ammo feed.
