Technically playing them on the bases they came with should be fine. Many people prefer you to rebase. Tournaments have their own rules.

I use old metal terminators, nobody ever complained. There are some advantages of short guys on small bases, but also some drawbacks. Agree with the above, I did the same for my metal termies - glued their 25 mm bases onto a 40 mm base.
