Re:How do guardsmen and others feel about the great warp rift?

GW has always been inconsistent about this. In one piece of lore, the Inquisition is dropping Exterminatus on a world on the mere suspicion that there MIGHT be some people who witnessed Chaos/Daemons there. In another, individual Guardsmen can identify Daemons and Chaos Space Marines down to to the specific Legion or God like Wiki experts. RecentlyI read a Black Library novel (Carrion Throne) where a full-fledged Inquisitor was somehow unaware of the events of the Horus Heresy and the Traitor Primarchs. Meanwhile, a Custodes in the same novel was hunting down Black Legion Marines for sport.

It's really best to go with this on a case to case basis. My personal take is a North Korea/Eastern Bloc-esque mentality: most people in those countries were/are aware that contrary to what their leaders say, things are better abroad than at home, but you don't talk about it publicly. Likewise, most Guardsmen/Imperial citizens are probably aware that the powers of Darkness are real and the Great Rift ist their doing, but are "discouraged" of dwelling too much upon it.

How do guardsmen and others feel about the great warp rift?

The rift being a thing has never been a problem - after all, you can see the damn thing from a significant portion of the galaxy.

But you can guess no-one is giving common guardsmen briefings about the thing.

Warp storms exist and are dangerous has never been an issue. Nor, for that matter, has the existence of daemons in an abstract sense. "From the begetting of daemons, our enemy deliver us" is a line from the Fede Imperialis, one of the basic ecclesiarchy prayers.

That daemons exist in a physical sense, you can summon them and they can give you superpowers and immortality is what the inquisition has always tried to suppress.

Whether a given regiment is allowed to survive encountering them varies from Inquisitor to Inquisitor, but it's worth noting that the mass-exterminatus-on-rumours is most noticeably from the Months of Shame after Armageddon I. This was (a) specifically trying to eliminate those who'd encountered a Daemon Primarch, not just a 'normal' daemon or possessed, and (b) perhaps pursued more zealously than normal as a 'screw you' to the Space Wolves.

As to the Horus Heresy thing in Carrion Throne, Spinoza is an interrogator, and it's not entirely clear what she believes or knows NOW - the description is what she was told in a religious progenum school as a child.

"And so the Emperor created the Nine Primarchs to guard against the Nine Devils of the Outer Hell, and they were victorious, and now sleep, watching over Mankind lest the Terror return.
As a child, it had never been clear to her who had created the Nine Devils. She did remember asking Sister Honoria why the Emperor had not created a hundred primarchs rather than match exactly the numbers offered up by the Outer Hell, and had received no answer but a lash from the electro-lance
for her trouble."

Re:How do guardsmen and others feel about the great warp rift?

Mass exterminatus based on rumors popped up on other occasions in 2nd edi as well. I think it was the Codex Imperialis core book that said something along the lines of "if there is no certainty that absolutely noone survived the battle, the Inqusition can apply an even more drastic measure: Exterminatus" or something like that. Said part also stated that Space Marines (who are too valuable to be BLAMed) get mind-wiped after encountering Chaos forces.

But then in 2nd Edi you ALSO had Codex: Chaos, which features in-universe stories where common Guardsmen identify things like Horus Heresy veteran Chaos Marines, Night Lords, World Eaters, Noise Marines, Slaanesh daemons, Khorne daemons etc by name. (Usually while just standing around and describing their enemies while being obliterated)

And honestly, the idea that you have a religion that is basically an over-the-top version of late medieval Catholicism that constantly sees daemonic influence behind every sort of "heretical behavior" yet ALSO a secret police that violently supresses the fact that the Church actually is right about the daemon part, doesn't really fit.
Interestingly, the concept of "silence those who know too much about daemons" fits much better into Tau state doctrine.

On the novel:

Spoiler:

I am not talking about Spinoza but Inquisitor Crowl, the part towards the end of the novel where he is pursuing the Dark Eldar inside the Emperor's Inner Sanctum. He comes across a display of 18 primarch memorials and is genuinely puzzled about their number)

Apparently, anyone who learns about the Grey Knights is mind-wiped or executed.
The whole "Exterminatus the whole planet on even a whiff of anyone knowing about Chaos" never struck me as believable or sustainable. Habitable planets and infrastructure are valuable and to destroy all of that for the sake of maybe some ignorant gangers or small time cultists? It would also mean the easiest way for actual Chaos forces to destroy the Imperium would be to just seed a few cultists onto a planet and then leak their existence to the Inquisition.

Re:How do guardsmen and others feel about the great warp rift?

The way I've always imagined the lore discrepancy between zero-tolerance Inquisition and seemingly wider knowledge of daemons is two-fold.
Firstly, anything that can be explained away as "heretic" or "traitor" is easily enough done. That's all the Chaos Space Marines accounted for.

As for actual daemons? ...the galaxy is a big place, and however hard they try, the Inquisition can't be everywhere. We know this because daemonic incursions do actually end up taking place.

Iracundus wrote:
It would also mean the easiest way for actual Chaos forces to destroy the Imperium would be to just seed a few cultists onto a planet and then leak their existence to the Inquisition.

I'm sure, on various planets, Tzeentch has both done this and also prevented himself from doing this.

Although that may be true for normal stellar phenomena, the warp rift clearly is more than even the average warp storm and seems to have affected things like the flow of time all over the galaxy even when those places don't continue to exist as permanent warp/realspace overlaps. So I handwave it away as more warp distortion, either causing the light to travel faster than normal light, or worlds being somehow in the "future" and thus being able to receive the light from the rift.
