Getting a friend into 40k...8th to 9th issue

Hi all.

Got a friend who used to play with me 20 years ago....he has gone out and bought an army on the back of us going to Warhammer world before lockdown.

I got back into 40k 10 months ago...painted loads then just learnt the rules before 9th announced.

Regards our first games....I am struggling to get my head round the new points/objective system. Do you think it would be wise(would it work ok) to play 9th Edition but with 8th Edition Objective Cards etc instead of the 9th secondaries etc?

I feel it was A a better system and B easier for me to introduce him with as I know it better.

Re:Getting a friend into 40k...8th to 9th issue

By all means, give it a go - whatever works.
I'd also suggest trying small games without any objectives to start off with, as you become more familiar maybe add a single objective in the centre of the board, maybe a single secondary objective until you get used to those too. Start building up your experience that way.

Re:Getting a friend into 40k...8th to 9th issue

If your friend and you are both new (or returning), definitely play whatever missions you have fun using. It won't break the game. My gaming group makes up missions all the time (especially when we run narrative campaigns). It can add a whole new level to the game that gets you both excited to play.

Mechanically missions and rules are　separate. Only thing　is rules for actions are left unused but so what.

I doubt there would be issue mechanically digging　up scenarios from 3rd edition for that matter. Some balance issues could come as you could spam fa for example more than was　intended then but even that isn'' issue here　as 8e

Re:Getting a friend into 40k...8th to 9th issue

To add to what others have said, while learning the rules there is not need to play Matched Play missions. Use the simpler Open Play missions or the Open War deck. Grab the older missions you are already familiar with. The point of 40K is to have fun, not play the competitive rules set.

Getting a friend into 40k...8th to 9th issue

We played our test game without secondaries and it was easy to learn, and still a lot of fun.

I think we'll probably see a new list of secondaries for competitive play at some point, but personally I prefer a middle ground between narrative and competitive, so its all good for me.
