Re:New Table Sizes and Folding Tables

Finding a 4' X 6' folding table is difficult enough so I can't see anyone making tables just for the new sizes when it is easier to just make the 4 by 6 and have people play with some room around the edges.

I done know anywere to get a folding table that size in the US or Canada. The only place I know of is Gamemat.eu. They are in Europe so shipping takes a while and can get pricey so it is your call.

https://www.gamemat.eu/en/folding-gaming-table/

There seems to be a lot of tables here that are 2 X 4 and 2 x 8 So i think people would make do with those sizes. We already mark of as well for lots of games, so i dont see that changing.

Re:New Table Sizes and Folding Tables

So, I haven't tried the Gamemat.eu table, but it looks to be a no-frills version of the Alpha 4x6 table from Firmer Terra, which I do have.

Spoiler:

The Alpha appears to be rated for about twice the weight of the Gamemat table (100lbs vs 25KG/~55lbs), has an extra set of leg extensions to give you two different heights, comes with a carry cover for the table, along with being a different color, and importantly, I think is still available right now, whereas the gamemat table is out of stock until next month. Unfortunately, the Alpha is also $100 more expensive. Both appear to have the same basic design and pack-away size.

So, for a quick review, it's about 30lbs all together, comes with a carry case and has handles built into either end of the table, it packs away easily enough to slide into a back car seat or hide in a hallway closet that's not too occupied. It fits a FLG 6x4 mat just fine as shown with a little extra room to spare. There's some wobble when set up, but no moreso than many of us would be normally used to anyway. It comes with extensions to allow it to be set up about six or seven inches taller than is shown here, and they all pack away underneath real neatly. The instructions say its rated for about 100lbs or so but I don't have much intention of testing that either way. The table sections don't lock when set up which is my only gripe, they sit just fine once set up, but it does mean that if setting it up solo you basically have to unfold it, set it on the ground, and assemble the legs from underneath, if you try to flip it upside down to assemble the legs and then flip it back up, the table will want to fold on you unless you have an assistant holding the other end or have a gigantic armspan. That said, once I figured that out, I was able to unpack and assemble it as shown in about two minutes flat. The pricetag was a bit spicy at $250, but trying to find something that I could fit in a car or closet that would support a 6x4 play space and didn't require separate boards to be laid on top of a folding table was otherwise difficult, shipping was free and it got here in about a week.

It's not something I'd want to use as a general purpose living room table or something I'd want to leave out all the time in a gaming store for daily use for years, but for something to set up in an apartment once a week or take to a pal's garage or a con or something, I'm digging it so far. If I run into anything unexpected I'll post an update. I've set it up and packed it away a few times now, it's definitely easier with two people, but still only takes a couple minutes with one person.

I would not expect to see any new 40k minimum-space specific-sized folding tables any time soon unless it's from GW themselves. For anyone else making them, as too many other potential users will need more space in at least one dimension than the new *minimum* GW table space will provide (and many 40k players play other stuff too), they'll just produce tables in 6x4 anyway, the total market isn't terribly huge and has gobs of overlap.
