A return to hobby - Horus Heresy Loyalist Iron Warriors

Hi there!

I am a former WFB junky that quit the hobby at the same time as I had my first kid (the same time, coincidently, that AoS came out). Recently I've had a bit more time again in evenings and the hobby bug has got me again, so I thought I'd try something that I've wanted to do since I started reading the HH book series - collect a legion!

I haven't played 40k since 2nd ed and never had much interest in it (it was always WFB for me), but HH, well, to me, that is a bit more cool. I've spent years thinking about this and whittling down which legion to do - ultimately, loyalist IW beat out loyalist Word Eaters and Thousand Sons - but it was a close thing, for a long time it was going to be World Eaters (love the colour scheme).

So, onto models. I was very daunted about how to start, I sat looking at my first test model for hours and hours and watched hours of videos on youtube. I haven't picked up a brush in 5 years, and not a marine in 25, so doing my test model was going to take time - and it did, 8 hours in fact, but here it is.

It wasn't necessarily designed to end up like this, I've not done any nonmetallic metal (not properly anyway, and not anything beyond badly done swords). It was supposed to be a flat grey cartoon, but somehow it just ended up like this, and I am super happy with it. I really wanted to get a cartoon NMM finish but thought I might need to burn through 5 - 10 model before getting my confidence up, but managed to get what I was after the first time (well, after 8 hours of repaint).

Here is attempt number 2, starting to get the method down.

Not sure on basing yet, will need to think, and well on the way through model three. I've done blogs in the past to help me remember my recipes and how I've achieved certain looks, so I might do a step by step soon, as a reminder to myself as much as anything else!

A return to hobby - Horus Heresy Loyalist Iron Warriors

Hey mate, welcome back to the hobby! Life can certainly get in the way, especially with little ones involved! I was a big WHFB fan too back in the day. I have dabbled my toe in Sigmar now and find it a pretty good game but it lacks the nostalgia factor of WHFB and the visual impact of smashing huge ranked regiments into each other or getting flanked by an arrowhead of Bretonnian knights!

This is a really promising start. The NMM is really well done - it is visually striking and I bet it looks great & keeps it impact at arms length. Super impressive at any point but especially after such a long break! Would love to see a tutorial if you get around to it.

Love the shoulder stripes and the nice spot of contrast with the teal gun as well.

Good luck with basing! I think a red Martian earth would suit the iron warriors aesthetic and combo well with the teal gun but I’m sure whatever you come up with will be great.

Will be following with interest!

Re:A return to hobby - Horus Heresy Loyalist Iron Warriors

Thanks for the kind words. Tzurk, you must have read my mind, red earth is where I am going to start for a base! For the gun, I've seen lots of IW with chevron guns, and they look great, but they feel more like they would be used by the traitorous majority of the legion, so I wanted something different. I thought the teal would contrast, but being a cool colour, with complement rather than clash - I really wasn't sure (and if there is a consensus they don't look right for heresy era, I'm open to other ideas) but I am glad you like them.

Any way, I threatened a step by step, and here it is, if I can remember it right...

So this is the start, a spray of mechanicus grey and a guide coat of nuln oil. I use nuln oil throughout the process to help with blends, which I have a long way to go to get right.

In this one, I have used Vallejo Cold Grey to put on a base coat, all feathered out in small strokes - I am trying to get a brushed steel effect.

This is probably the cleanest stage (don't they look a bit Space Wolfey at this point?), a base of Plague Brown on the shoulders, and another lighter coat of the grey using stonewall. At this point, I try to carve out the shapes of the NMM, I am new to this - first attempts, so just starting to learn how it works - making a hash of it in plenty of places! in this model, this involves screwing up the left leg and repainting it. Part of this stage involves very roughly going over the chest, I am trying to get a worn effect, which I will come back to later. The gun is Scurvy Green.

This is the pop stage, adding this layer of Ghost Grey suddenly starts to make things stand out and create the effect I am after.

Chevron work begins, I use Vallejo Black Ink when I paint in lines, it is an amazing colour, floats off the brush and covers excellently.

Final work on the chevrons here. The second layer is Japanese Uniform, my absolute go to colour for a flat yellow. Top highlight is Moon Yellow. The top of the shiny bits are picked out in white, and the eyes in red using Gory Red and Squid Pink.

And done, final touches and battle damage - this looks rubbish close up, but from 2 ft looks nice and smooth and believable. I'll get it better.

Re:A return to hobby - Horus Heresy Loyalist Iron Warriors

I've done quite a bit of work and detailed a new, faster, method for my NMM effect - using simple dry brushing! Here is how:

First we start largely as before, a mechanics standard grey primer, then a nuln oil overcoat. Over this I have done a heavy dry brush of Cold Grey, paying attention to where the light falls on the model.

Next is a slightly light dry brush of mixed Cold Grey and Stonewall Grey, then pure Stonewall Grey.

Last for the drybrush stage is a pure Ghost Grey very light drybrush, again focussing on where the light will hit the tips of the model.

From there the process is largely as before until this stage. Then for the final touches...

At this point we focus on the sharp details, importantly, this includes getting pure Dead White, very thinned, and drawing in the straight lines where the light flows over the cylinder sections of the armour, and dotting the spherical areas.

So that's it, not that hard to do!

A return to hobby - Horus Heresy Loyalist Iron Warriors

It is great to see someone rejoin the hobby after a hiatus. I can definitely relate that young kids can put a pause on things. Like you, I also find Horus Heresy a great place for “old timers” in the hobby because of the classic stories and characters and the stable rules. (The constantly changing rules and points values and strategem cards and formations of 40k make it daunting to follow for someone like me that takes a few years to build and paint an army and only plays a handful of games per year. Horus Heresy is much more my tempo! I don’t have to worry about the meta changing every few months and keeping up with a massive amount of changes, unique rules and cards.

Anyway, the Iron Warriors look absolutely terrific. I’m not normally a huge fan of them because the all-metal scheme can look flat. But your quick NMM technique looks superb. And of course adding the dust and the nice bases just shows the extra level of love and detail that most HH players tend to lavish on their models.

I’m looking forward to seeing more.

As for what’s next, I agree more infantry makes sense to start. I’m not sure if you have the rules but tactical squads can be 10-30 men and fulfilling your two mandatory Troops choices can only come from Tactical, Assault, or Breacher squads. Other Troops choices count as Troops but can not fulfill the first two mandatory choices.

Mixing armor is definitely allowed and makes sense in HH as armies fought for years on extended supply lines and had to make due with what they had.
