PBC and a Helbrute. I want it to be as tournament friendly as possible. Would it be more appropriate to use a 100mm round, 120mm round, 130mm round, 170mm round, or maybe sit the model sideways on a 120mm x 92mm oval to replicate the spread of the Defiler's legs?

AoS base size document has the 160mm base listed for the Soul Grinder, which told me all I really needed to know. I had never seen a defiler in person, but once I snagged one, the 160mm is DEFINITELY the best base size. It defines a clear cut boundary you can use to determine range (particularly in house games with in-house rules for measuring distance) at a purely objective level.

Also, it removes the rare cases of douchebaggary when people 'hide' their characters underneath a defiler/triarch stalker or any similar models that have negative volumes that do not normally have a base.

In short, having bases make models that you'd normally measure to hull conform to the core rules that much more objectively.
