Recovery from damaged/bumpy painting

Hi all,

I picked up some old 40k Black Templars a few months ago and I made the mistake of letting my wife's little sister have a go at painting them (honest it wasn't me). I had initially stripped them back to base plastic but they already had a few bumps on them and particularly on the shoulder pad things.

Now they look awful. Dare I risk trying to paint over them again in the hope that the lines will go away? Should I just place them on the table and try not to be embarrassed? Or is there a way of stripping back and fixing individual parts of the model?

I don't really want to spend half a day scrubbing them with chemicals and a toothbrush.

Help!

Throwing more paint on top of bad isn't going to make them look better, only worse. :( The best thing you can do now is give 'em the ol' heave-ho into the stripper, and scrub off the offending bits.

Maybe fix the underlying surface area issues while they're bare, too, because flaws in the plastic always show up in the final paint job. Cutting corners in prep pays no dividends.

Technically you could scrub just some parts with something like an old toothbrush and stripper, but it's going to be much messier and annoying than just dunking away.

Thanks for your advice, I think using super glue to fix the crosses was probably a mistake, is there any way to do that without leaving glue residue all over the model? I find that sometimes happens with sticking arms and things on too. I guess plastic glue is the proper way to go?

You want gel superglue, it's way more precise and also dries quicker.

Strip it back with methylated spirits it should also brittle the superglue so you chip it off with a pick.

Being brutally honest, I would bin them, get some new models and start from the beginning. Painting over them is just going to make them worse, and stripping plastic requires specific products that don't damage the plastic.

Either as terrain bits, paint practice, or just lean into it with the paint job. Maybe this Marine has taken some melta hits to the shoulders, or nasty acid from a Chaos Spawn. Sure, they look nice 'factory fresh' but that doesn't tell a story the way some battle damage can.
