The early bits about that were that the nightbringer was orbiting their sun and feeding on it, making it a bale and violent star, so maybe the nightbringer's influence locked disease, suffering and early death into their dna that they could not heal. They couldn't fix their dna as there was no healthy necrontyr dna to use as a model, see?

Couldnt the necrontyr just go to another planet?

Life span is relative.

In terms of our planet, right now? Humans are pretty long lived, even in countries with lower life expectancies.

Now, The Old Ones are billed as being virtually immortal. And the Necrontyr short lived.

Within those undefined reference points, who knows how long either actually lived? If your foe lives, on average, for 10,000,000 years, and you live, on average 1,000,000 years and so on.

The Necrontyr absolutely did have a pre-War In Heaven empire though. But it could be that having evolved under specific circumstances, their options for colonisation were limited. Sure their native sun apparently shortened their life span, but it’s entirely possible their biology needed that level of solar activity.

Consider SAD, a real world thing which affects me. Short version? My happiness requires sunlight. When the nights are long, and it’s dark before I’ve finished work, I’m more prone to depression. Yet, being Scottish, my pasty skin simply isn’t useful around the equator (once got blisters on my shoulders on holiday in Cyprus. That was a whole new pain!).

If I was a template for humanity, we’d be even more limited in terms of Goldilocks Zones.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Matt Swain wrote:
The early bits about that were that the nightbringer was orbiting their sun and feeding on it, making it a bale and violent star, so maybe the nightbringer's influence locked disease, suffering and early death into their dna that they could not heal.
Couldnt the necrontyr just go to another planet?

When I first started Necrons nearly 20 years ago the lore was along the lines of them having short life spans due to the damage their sun had caused their race. I didn’t read this as the sun causing their lives to end prematurely, more that it caused that as part of their evolution.

They eventually left their planet, but that lifespan was now genetic, and they grew envious of the other races with seemingly endless lifespans - which they went to war with in envy and got their arses handed to them.

They find the C’Tans, learn great things technologically, start to win the war but are eventually tricked into transferring to their metal bodies so the C’Tan can feast on their bodies.

At that time, the narrative was not that they eventually rose up against the C’Tan.

As such, according to that narrative - leaving their solar system to another planet makes no difference - they evolved to live short lives.
