First attempt at nmm and osl.

Hi guys and girls.
I started with my fourth mini and i wanted to try some nmm and osl. I am reasonably satisfied, but could definitely need some guidance or feedback.
Thank you

The osl is pretty good. Not too much, and quite subtle. What I would advise is that if you want to do osl, you need to darken the rest of the paint scheme, to draw attention to it. Otherwise it looks strange. You don't get bright lights in bright daylight. So here I'd darken his skin and clothes a lot. Start with a black base and layer up your tones from there, stopping a shade or two lower than your brightest highlights normally go to.

The NMM on the buckles looks good. You may find it harder initially when you move to bigger areas, but stick with it and you'll be ok.

Thank you for your feedback.
I get what you are saying. I have ditched the idea of the nmm, i need to get a bit more brush experience to pull it off i think. I did darken up the facemask and allready helped a bit. I didnt darken the skin because i worked pretty hard on it and was actually pretty happy with it

First attempt at nmm and osl.

QAR is touching on it but there is a golden rule to OSL:

Light cannot make things darker.

This means that your blue glow on the very light grey doesn't read correctly. OSL typically works best over darker base colours (avoid using it where possible over metallics or light colours).

So, how to fix? First, brighten the source - bring that up toward white some more. Use the current lightest blue to highlight the grey - looks like its just a touch lighter.

Alternatively, glaze over the body of the goggles with a darker grey to darken everything else. You need a strong light/dark contrast to make OSL read correctly, hence the suggestion to avoid it on light colours. Metallics are a special case; they're just *difficult* to do convincing OSL on - it's very hard to get a colour tint going while maintaining a metallic finish (one reason why many OSL pieces go full NMM).

Re:First attempt at nmm and osl.

Good start and some good advise so far, winterdyne makes a good point about osl and metallics, I do a bit of a TMM NMM hybride like the spent shells in the picture, they are painted metallic as normal with the apparent osl effect picked out. Saves time rather than going full NMM.

You should look in to glazes, you could tone down the flesh in 5 mins with ease.
