Tip for playing as RG successor against Blood Angels?

So, it's been a while since I last played against blood angels competitively. I'll be up against a strong BA player in the first round of a competition. Interested to hear how you deal with BA in general tactical terms (rather than list building advice, as my list is already done and dusted). I run RG successors with bolter fusillades and whirlwind of rage (so re-roll 1s on bolter shots, 6s in melee give extra hit).

I'll be running an Indomitus Lt with relic armour for 5+++ and rites of war to sit with aggressors (6) and terminators (5, 1 with CML), a jump chaplain (MOS) also with 5+++ relic armour to lead VGVs with twin LCs, a chief apothecary who is my warlord (MOA) to shift the aggressors somewhere they can be aggressive.

I've also got a redemptor (plasma) and venerable (twin las) dreadnoughts, 5 eradicators, 2 x 5 man incursors, 1 lot of intercessors with grenade launcher, 3 eliminators and a vindicare assassin.

My plan is to try and keep away from them and shoot lots. Maybe lull the BA into approaching the incursors with his sanguinary guard by sitting on an objective, then using guerrilla tactics to zip them somewhere else on the board a long way away, then shoot at them with something else.

I was also thinking of maybe using the aggressors, terminators and dreadnoughts as a tar-pit in the centre to lull him into trying to take it down. My thinking is that between the apothecary healing/resurrecting them, the Lt giving re-rolls of 1s to wound and the Venerable giving re-roll 1s to hit to one unit, they might do a good job of it and, if not, at least have good firing lanes with tons of bolter shots.

Otherwise, I am kind of at a loss other than trying to stay out of move + median advance + median charge range and shooting lots. Last time I played this guy, I got walloped good and proper, so keen to make a better account of myself this time around.

So... tips to use what I have the most effectively?

Blood Angels have a lot of key buff support characters, try to use the snipers you have to pick them off if/when you can.

Cram yourself into defensible terrain where possible; 5+ Overwatch from Aggressors and +1 to hit on any other unit can be devastating.

Apart from that, make sure you select good Secondaries which you can accomplish while he's ramming his jump pack contingent down your throat.

Thanks, that is very useful. If I get time, I might swap out 1 aggressor and 1 eradicator for another unit of eliminators + upgrade one of the incursor squads to infiltrators to beef up my character sniping.

I think a smart BA player would avoid trading his Sanguinary Guard for a squad of incursors from the very beginning. His own incursors or assault intercessors are more than capable of putting the hurt on your incursors themselves on the charge. I'd expect him to use turn 1 to stage the Sanguinary Guard somewhere behind LoS or obscuring terrain at midboard and then wait for you to expose something a little more juicy like your Terminators or Aggressors into midboard to contest a point.

Relentless Assault is a popular BA secondary where they need to get more units in your deployment than you have in theirs. Between Guerilla tactics and upon wings of fire strats, he has plenty of options for sneaking phobos or jump pack units into corners of your deployment zone to help him score it. It can be pretty difficult for Space Marines to maintain deepstrike screens in later turns of the game, so your best way to prevent scoring on that may be actually drop some of your own units into their deployment in similar fashion.

SG can heroically intervene 6" with a strat so don't get caught out by that.

Invulns make BA bounce. Your Terminators are going to be your best bet to tank a charge from assault doctrine'd SG. Especially if SG are next to warlord to get +1 hit. Everything else will pretty much crumple. If you are going to tar pit, I wouldn't try and do it with the aggressors as the lead even though it's tempting for the overwatch potential. I'd keep them reserved for a countercharge.

I've seen what happens when SG get auspexed scanned by 5 eradicators. It's not good. You can use the threat of that as a pseudo 12" deepstrike deny bubble around them.

Tip for playing as RG successor against Blood Angels?

Thanks for the tips! So I guess I'll try and:

(1) snipe his characters with eliminators and vindcare assassin
(2) carefully position my infiltrators and other troops to screen my deployment zone and create space that will require at least 2 turns of movement to get into charge range (if possible).
(3) space out my units so as to not allow an easy "domino" effect if he wipes out a unit in melee
(4) use the terminators as my tarpit centre piece (maybe with support from the dreadnoughts)
(5) hold back the aggressors a bit from the terminators, so the terminators can fall back (if needed) and they can shoot the heck out of what was engaging the terminators OR just use SFTS to hold them back for deployment within 9" anywhere on the board after turn 2. Maybe consider having the eradicators with the aggressors as a little castle, to maximise the threat of auspex strat + counter-charge if I don't do the SFTS thing, or maybe even use SFTS on both.

Wish me luck!

Sobie wrote:
I think a smart BA player would avoid trading his Sanguinary Guard for a squad of incursors from the very beginning.
