A complete, nice metal pewter squad costs much less than a plastic squad, which is partially 18 years old on top of that. Madness !

The steel legion costs 20.5 £ / 30 € , while the faux-new cadians are 29 £ / 35 €.

And there is a nice missile launcher in the steel legion box on top of that.
Sad that they discontinued the Steel Legion plasma gunner / officer and alternative heavy weapons (HB / LC) a while ago.
Hopefully there is Ebay & Co.

(£6 for 20pts) Not great but less than half the new asking price.

As a comparison space marine infantry (intercessors) are only £0.18 per point! (£35 for 200pts)

Astra Militarum were always an expensive faction to collect, but this is huge!

If didn't already have like 20,000 points in Guard I totally would. I haven't really needed to buy anything other than rule books and codexes for a long time. I've been playing since 3rd edition.

I still remember when I first started, it would have been around 2003, in the end-point of 3rd edition. My first experience into 40k was a present from one of my uncles, he gave me a toolbox and told me to open it. It was full of Space Wolves, but there was one model in there that was different. Something the owner either put in there by accident, or just somehow had as apart of their collection, a single Cadian guardsmen. The old metal ones.

I thought this model was way cooler than the Space Wolves I was given and had a look around town to see if I could find more. Found a box of the newly released plastic Cadian guardsmen and bought it with all the pocket money I had saved up. Back then they came in boxes of 20. I built and painted them. Probably spent a day per model. Then I found out a few people in high school also played it, I didn't even know it was a game at that point.

I told them I collected Guard and said I had 20 models that I could play with. They explained the rules and that I needed a codex for my army. Went back to the bookshop maybe a month later after I saved enough pocket money and bought the 3.5 edition Guard codex. I was shocked that I needed a lot more (but still less than now) Guardsmen to actually play.

Over the next month I bought another 20 model box, and a heavy weapon team. Back when you could get heavy weapon teams in either a single, or three model box. Built them and painted them.

The next month I discovered that there was actually an electronics shop in town that sold 40k as well. The owner actually played as well and just wanted to get more people involved so he sold everything at cost, his main business was the electronics so he didn't really need the extra money. I saw that he offered Cadian Battleforces which was a HUGE saving compared to what I was getting all those single kits from the book store.

It took me a bit longer to get them, about every 3 months I was able to get a Battleforce box. Maybe 2 months if I pocketed my lunch money and didn't eat for that day, I was crazy back then. Ended up getting 5 of those boxes that year.

So my collection ballooned to 140 guardsmen, 13 heavy weapon teams, and 5 leman russ tanks. Then I realised I needed commanders, so I asked the store owner to order in some of the old medal Cadian officers (I still love the look of them) and a Cadian command squad box. Ended up with 3 command squad boxes (15 models there) and 6 other officers.

This is going on far too long, and we're still in 2003 - 2004. To summarise, I kept saving my pocket (and sometimes lunch) money and bought at least 1 kit every month or 2. I did that until about the start of 5th edition. I probably had 5000 points in Guard units from just the 3.5 codex datasheets alone.

I think it's great that more people will be using third party models now, because GW are really taking the piss with these prices. Hopefully it also encourages a more tolerant attitude toward third party models in tournaments. I also use the Mantic Mule miniatures for my jeeps, mostly because I think the Taurox looks silly.

Hmm, could have sworn that LVO's new modeling policy required GW models, but I can't find it now, except for the stipulation that if you make it to a streamed table (or are asked to play on a streamed table earlier in the event), you have to use GW models or you're not eligible to play any more. So I guess technically you can go to LVO with non-GW models...you just can't advance to a winning position, you'd have to forfeit if you made it that far and don't have GW models.

You know about the Les Grognards Command and Heavy Support box, right?
