For Pearlescent effects you can buy Pearl medium to mix with paints or I believe another method is to paint clear inks like (tamiya maybe??) over a metallic colour

For metallics, a good reflective silver with transparent candycoat or ink is time consuming but looks the most realistic. If you want something a bit special however it may be worth looking at Alclad metallics.
