I've been into 40k since 2009 and have yet to complete a painted army. Retiring in 2019 didn't help either, as I'm such a glacially slow painter that my motivation to get the brushes out is often crushed by the length of time before I see any real results.

Enter Speedpaints to the rescue!

I've had some failures here too, which have lead to multiple recent stripping rounds. Had real trouble getting a smooth coat on power armour. Paint was either pooling and blotchy or would show brush marks where I tried to smooth it out. The only way I could get an acceptable (not perfect) finish was to use the Speedpaints on a wet palette - IE what everyone says not to do. The room where I paint is always overly warm and it felt like the paint was drying out on the dry palette even if I added medium or flow aid. The wet palette seems to absorb just enough moisture to make it work for me.

Current state of play is a bit of a mishmash, with the completed mini's in the display cabinet being painted traditionally to a Battle Ready standard:



Before all the subsequent failures, the first Speedpaint test mini's turned out okay - think we were going through a colder spell so paints not drying out so much:


Yesterday I stripped (again) the last test mini (from the 3 marine issue of Conquest) and a squad of Hellblasters and the 2 Lieutenant's from Dark Imperium:


And here they are again later in the day after spray priming with Wraithbone:


Currently on the painting table is a squad of Aggressors:


I'm using a 50/50 mix of Cloudburst Blue/Highlord Blue for the basecoat.

A little progress, trying to at least do a little each day.

Finished the sloppy basecoat of the armour on the Aggressors and the Intercessor. Light spray of matt varnish so it doesn't reactivate when painted over.

Basecoated the metals with Leadbelcher on the Intercessor and 2 of the Aggressors.

Motivation took a nosedive for over a week when I didn't do any painting at all. Silly really, as all they needed was a tidy up pass and varnish which I have done today.

Aggressors and Intercessor completed:









The armour turned out a little lighter than the previous Speedpaint tests, probably due to the wet pallette. Meh, I can live with that if it gives me a more consistent result.
I think they have turned out okay for tabletop quality which is what I was aiming for, and despite the laziness were still completed in a reasonable time. I'm calling that a win.

Now I have to start thinking about how I'm going to paint them. Speedpaint would look awful on those bigger flat panels. Could airbrush the Speedpaint which would keep the colour similar but would then need to manually panel line. Could use the sponge/stipple method which wouldn't look as good on those panels but would be much quicker.

So while mulling that over, I've primed up the last of my built Ultramarine units:



Wraithbone spray ran out before I had quite finished, could do with another pass on some of the Redemptor parts. Have ordered Colour Forge Wight Bone spray which is a little cheaper and 500ml rather than 400ml. Haven't used Colour Forge sprays before but it is supposed to be a match for Wraithbone.

I guess I have a few more days to think on the painting challenge while waiting for the spray to arrive. If I can't come up with anything then I will skip the challenge this month as my priority is to get the Ultramarines done.

Rattle can reinforcements arrived yesterday so I completed the priming of the Redemptor parts, which was when disaster struck. Must have sprayed from too far away as they ended up like crackle paint and with a slightly rough texture. Rub your finger lightly on them and a film of dusty dried paint is your reward. I'll have to dunk them in IPA and strip them before trying again.

I had a couple of failed attempts at getting the helmet stripes done, so settled for a compromise in the end. I just don't have the brush control to get neat straight lines.

This meant some parts got overpainted again and ended up quite blotchy as speedpaint dries real quick and is very unforgiving of mistakes:




My adventures in speedpainting have been very hit or miss, with the results being fairly low quality and inconsistent.

I have illuminated them on their shortcomings and censured them all with an IPA bath:



I'm going back to my old Battle Ready method as I am at least happy with the results, can correct mistakes and turn out a consistent quality.

I've still got some time left this month so am going to attempt to re-paint the Lieutenants for the challenge. Seems like bad form to leave them as a completed entry when I have since stripped them.
