Bilzander's Deathskull Orks

Hey all! This is my first time writing something like this, so excuse me if I make any mistakes!

A little introduction;
I got back into the hobby at the end of 2021, having not collected any models since a young age (my dad used to play). I instantly fell in love with the hobby and have done quite a bit of painting and playing since. I recently finished a bomb squig for my Ork kill team (which is also part of a greater ork force I'm working on for this blog), and I thought I finally am good enough to start a blog. I'm far from a professional, I'd say I'm still below the average painter - but I'm somewhat more confident in posting my painted models online now as I'm quite happy with them. Anyway - time to get onto the models!

Well, one model; introducing...

Bombur, the Bomb Squig.[u]

After finding a dwarf helmet from an old set years ago, I figured "Bombur" would be the perfect name, given that it's a Dwarf from "The Hobbit", and the squig has a metric tonne of bombs strapped to him.

Putting the model together was fun, but I messed up with the mouth, putting it on first before the bombs inside. Nothing a little pressure couldn't fix though! Attached the little dwarf helmet on, which fit much better than expected, no filing or modifications required, and it was ready to spray.

A little diversion;

Bases are one of my favourite parts of the hobby. I think they really make a model look great - though I'm defo still learning! The base I had in mind was him jumping over a dead space marine, so I got to work with painting the chestpiece; while painting it, I found a very old chestpiece (from when I was much younger!), and thought the comparison was cool, and maybe you guys will too. Seeing progress is so great!

Back to the model! Here's the base completed with the very first base layer of Bombur painted. I was having a blast at this point, even if the 40*C temperatures were making my paint dry up in an instant.

I then went over and finished up the details on the model - Sorry for the lack of progress pics on this part. I didn't think I'd be making a blog post on it! I'll be sure to take more on the rest of the kill team.

Overall, it was super fun to make and paint. Even though it's such a small and insignificant model, it was some of the most fun I've had going through the process of making, painting and picturing it.

Thanks for reading!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh - forgot to mention. This is my first time trying to take a picture of my minis which isn't just a quick pic. Any advice is much appreciated (on the mini, photo, or anything else! )

Welcome bilzander! A fun start to your postings, you gotta love a bomb squig. The dwarf/squat/votann helmet suits him well. the base is cool too and seeing improvements is always a good motivation.

As for pics, Warhammer Community has a good article on pics on their website. That said it looks to me that your light is coming from the front left only, which is putting the right in shadow. Another light from the right would help show the minis off to their best (and I find it shows all the bits I missed too )

I checked out the article and it was very helpful. I've ordered a new light to come so that I can light the front also (I was just using my painting light for this one ). I am currently working on some terrain so I can actually play killteam but once I'm done with that I'll get to work on the burna boy and use the new light for those pictures. May post a few pictures of the terrain here, it's only basic TTCombat stuff but it's damn good value for what you get.
