Journey to becoming a better painter (Death Guard)

Like many, the Pandemic made me revisit all my past hobbies and had a bit of a renaissance with two things I had loved since I was a kid - Warhammer and Pokemon. Both have stuck as expensive hobbies that bring me alot of joy.

As a bit of a perfectionist coming back and realising:
1) I am not as good as I was as a kid and 2) even though I won a few local painting comps as a kid I was not that good of a painter back then

Has taken some getting used to. I also find myself getting pretty frustrated until I eventually give up for a few months and I want to overcome this barrier and keep growing as a painter. Ideally one day I would be in a position where I feel happy about something I've painted/potentially can start to enter some competitions.

Task one for me has been getting a test scheme painted for my new Death Guard army. I have a lot of backlog for these guys, and have debated whether to do Green/Pallid Hand or Grimdark using Streaking Grime. In the spirit of getting better at painting I want to avoid the easy options and really focus on techniques.

I really struggle with glazing/volumetric highlighting, but overall I don't hate what I've done so far. Keen for any and all feedback that is constructive and will help me to improve.

Re:Journey to becoming a better painter (Death Guard)

Have spent the last few days learning a bit more about glazing and working on my test model. I want to try spend more time on this guy until I feel confident I like the scheme enough.

I still have the horns, face and gun to do a fair bit of work on. Debating which colour plasma will work best. Green, Bright Red? I want to do Mortarion similar to one of my favourite painters El Miniturista (just google his mortarion) so maybe I'll try to keep it to a magic blue/pink colour to tie in?

I also switched the brighter red cloak for a more burgandy as I think it looks nicer against the green. Definitely will use a deeper bronze than the Pro Acryl Copper (which comes across as gold) as I think its too bright for Nurgle. Maybe I'm wrong but we will see.

Bought some basing materials and had a mess around on a base, going to take a lot of practice to use them in a way that looks good.. but I'm looking forward to it.

I reached out to a fantastic local painter today and asked him to mentor me, seemed positive... so let's see how we go.

Thanks for reading, as always open to any and all comments
