Mentor Legion 40k. I'm starting small, with '40k in 40 minutes' / 'Combat Patrol' forces, which are 400 points with restricted options (no 2+ saves, no models with more than 2W, no vehicles with armour totals of over 33 etc).

I'm going to do 400 points of marines, 400 points of Valhallans, and 400 points of Tyranids. and then increase the army sizes to 800 points, then 1200 points, then 1500 points. Then add extra stuff, like Baneblades etc, for fun.
And it's probably going to take me a while...

The idea is to just have it be an enjoyable, low pressure hobby project I can do to relax a bit.

I'm starting with the Marines. The list is:

5x Tactical Marines, with Flamer and Lascannon
Razorback, with twin-linked Heavy Bolter and Storm Bolter
5x Scouts, with bolters, Heavy Bolter, and one Sniper rifle
5x Scouts, with Pistols and CCWs, with a Missile Launcher
Landspeeder with Heavy Bolter

396 points in total, and not a huge amount to paint.The Valhallans will be quite a lot more models, I expect.

I planned to go with Crimson Fists, but after painting two, I found I didn't really enjoy painting their colour scheme. And this is supposed to be fun. So I've switched to Mentor Legion instead, and gone for a very dirty, weathered look.

I'm using Primaris marines with some Firstborn bits. That way they'll look suitably heroically sized next to the Valhallan metals.

First 7 models done; 5 Tacticals, 1 Razorback, and 1 Scout.

Mentor Legion I ended up buying a couple of tanks to go with my Guard infantry today. No chance of fitting them into the Combat Patrol rules though; they'll have to wait until I expand the armies a bit.

Nope, no HQ needed - you can take one, but don't have to.

3rd's just my favourite version of 40k; it was the longest lasting edition, with lots of development and options. Plus, it was the one released while I was working retail at GW, so I played it a lot!
There's also a pretty good player base these days; there's quite a few events for 3rd, and the Facebook Group is very active.

Anyway, next up will be cracking on with the Scouts, and having a go at the Landspeeder.
The speeder is undercoated blue (I was planning Crimson Fists), so I may have to respray it. The green should cover OK, but I'm a bit worried about the white... we'll see!



In other news, I've started prepping the first Valhallan squad. And there's a lot of filing to be done! Not looking forward to prepping 80 or so metal infantry...
