https://gamefound.com/en/projects/monolith-board-games-sarl/incarnation
https://gamefound.com/en/projects/monolith-board-games-sarl/depths-of-cadwallon

Monolith boardgames are legit - I have their Conan game - and the pieces, although the material is PVC like, are as good or better than I have seen from some table top wargames. I really enjoyed painting them, which is a rare thing to say for a board game!

I am following these and have joined their discord. I found a really good sign this will be worth while in their introductions section, quoted below:

"Hello everyone,
my name is Didier (54). I was one of the designers, along with Edouard Guiton, of the former Confrontation and Hybrid lines few years ago.
I've been working for several months now on the revival of this wonderful universe as the line's art director.

I will be responsible for maintaining artistic consistency and its necessary visual evolution.

I truly hope you'll like this new version and that it will keep you enthusiastic. It's certainly gratifying to see the excitement surrounding this announcement. I think you're in for some surprises!"

I am looking forward to seeing how this turns out!

I'll believe it when I see it on retail shelves. Monolith is indeed legit, but this is hardly the first time somebody has tried (and so far failed) to bring back Confrontation.

I loved 3rd ed, still have my Lions and Wolfen painted armies, plus a hundred or so various PPP 4th ed plastics. Looking forward to following the project, but not sure if I'll be backing this one

Is there a difference between them?

As for the Conan game, I agree Monolith is completely legit and not some fly by night company. I've seen their monsters and bigger NPC/enemies and been tempted to buy but their heroes seem ill suited for the PVC medium being very spindly and not well details due to the true scaling of their bodies (i.e. not giant heads and hands with thick torsos but instead actual human proportions). Admittedly I don't own them but seeing ebay listing with them up close, I was turned off from buying them as fantasy RPG minis unlike the monsters and "thicc" humanoids like the Picts.

Regardless, they had some great looking minis back in the day so I'm glad to see them coming back. There was a questionable crowdfunder about a decade or more back that imploded spectacularly by a completely different company from what I remember. In case anyone sees that, that debacle has no relation to this upcoming campaign other than being based on the same core late 90s IP.

2 Different campaigns with the same IP that last time it was brought back was a disaster where no one got anything and far as I last recall the manager of the whole thing was taken to court (because they started multiple companies and sub-firms and then bankrupted them over and over whilst at the same time funnelling all the campaign money into them or somesuch).

I dunno, honestly at this stage I think if you want that style of models go to Sigum Games - they've been doing the style and growing for years and have kept growing even whilst being based in Ukraine (start of the war they had to relocate their whole operation in the middle of doing a kickstarter - and they delivered on it too).

I wish them luck, but 2 different campaigns built on a franchise that has been dead in the water and used for scams just doesn't scream a healthy starting point.

Original fans of the franchise (which died decades ago) are already most likely burned from the last failed campaign.

Honestly I'd love to see the style return, but I think its the kind of thing that if you want it to happen; the business has to take the first step and actually make and release something to market.
There does seem to be a lot of interest still - the discord is one of the busiest I am on, and its running in five languages (English, French, German, Spanish and Italian).

Poor concept possibly - depends why the previous ones failed. I know one was run by a fraudster (the kickstarter) but cant remember why the other failed (IP issues?).

Poor taste less so as there are more than those two doing minis inspired by or incorperating the humour/dynamism/stylisation of Rackham. Giving up because idiots and criminals have taken advantage of it is a poor show, but I know people do follow one bitten twice shy.

I will keep an eye on it and let you all know how its going. I hope it works - I loved the style, and they had so much potential as a skirmish game (and wargame if they jumped to plastic).

Yes they were handled under other teams, but that doesn't change the fact that a core of loyal fans have nothing for their investment in the franchise.

I'd rather have seen them take longer to bring the game to market on their own, even as a simple starter with only a handful of models THEN go for crowd funding to grow and expand. I think that would have a vastly greater chance of raising loads of hype and cash. Right now I feel like loads of people will be on the fence and even those pledging will be going for low tier options not top tier.

One's a dungeoncrawler, the other a PvP wargame. About the same number of Followers for both.

Depths of Cadwallon by Monolith Board Games
Descend beneath the Free City of Cadwallon in a fantasy dungeon crawler where misfits, mercenaries and treasure hunters brave forgotten ruins, deadly creatures and buried secrets in search of glory and riches. Also, expand this journey through The Book of Aarklash, the definitive lorebook of the universe.

Incarnation by Monolith Board Games
Lead Incarnated heroes and elite warriors into battle in a tactical fantasy skirmish game set in the reborn world of Aarklash. Explore its legends, peoples and forgotten history through The Book of Aarklash, the definitive lorebook of the universe.

EDIT: I also think Monolith should have led with the PvP game, as that's the game Confrontation fans wanted. They could have added an "Exclusive" dungeoncrawl ruleset using the Incarnation miniatures (cf. Skyrim boardgame miniatures includes a Call to Arms miniature game intro), and set up a beta testing group to measure interest in a dungeoncrawler. I've seen no interest or a suggestion of a Cadwallon dungeoncrawl on Lead Adventures Forum.

I've been following Monolith's projects since Conan. They regularly crowdfund boardgames and RPG's based on IP's: Conan, Batman, Berserk, etc., as well as their own Mythic Battles line.
https://gamefound.com/en/creators/monolith-board-games-sarl?ref=project_home-11336

I backed the original Conan KS, original Mythic Battles KS, and much later Batman RPG miniatures. No problems with fulfillment, although miniature prices have gone up (shipping killed crowdfunding after Covid) and I'm "meh" on dice-based mechanics. Nowadays, if you're not married to an IP, you can still drop $$$$ on bulk miniatures on sale from an OLGS.

Yes, the Sans Detour crowdfunding of Cadwallon, which I also followed closely, was a horrible mess -- and had a ridiculous number of red flags. But IP's are not the business. While the IP may attract your attention, it's the company licensing the IP you watch out for. Sadly, because not all crowdfunders understand this, many IPs do not get a second chance. (Of course, the original license holders vary in how responsible they are protecting their licenses, and who actually owns a license can be a byzantine maze in itself.)

As for retail, Monolith tried selling Conan (this was many years ago) retail, and ended up *losing* money on each sale b/c distributors, this one Asmodee, require a hefty discount, something like 40%. And Conan was available in the clearance bins for awhile at various OLGS's. So, afaik, Monolith uses crowdfunding to "franchise" a game line. New game for the same game system, and all that. If you want to hold off on backing this time, maybe they'll have another one in a few more years. That's how I bought the Batman miniatures, since I wasn't interested in pay for them through the original boardgame KS.

Finally, after the Sans Detour debacle, a small one-man (?) company DID acquire the rights to Cadwallon / Confrontation. The rights ended up being owned by a computer game or software company (!?!) who was not interested in publishing the game. His name is gibby64 and he posted and released some metal miniatures, but I can't find any 2026 posts. LAF's and my impression from his posts was that he actually cared about the product line. Pretty obviously, a one-man company casting metal can't support an in-demand IP like a "larger" company could, so it makes sense for a company like Monolith to "kickstart" the Cadwallon IP again, though I don't know their licensing agreement, nor if he'll be supporting the game with new figures once Monolith passes onto it's next project. Anyway, here's a link so you can see for yourself and contact gibby64 if you're interested. You'll need to sign up so you can see the Search function. https://www.leadadventureforum.com/index.php?board=18.0

Confrontation is returning - By Monolith boardgames

I think it's a mistake for them to try running 2 campagins at once, even if it is for different games in the IP universe

first it's going to look back to potential backers who, as has been said, have been burned before, even if they do want to give monolith a chance 2 projects = twice the risk

second folk who like rackams IP and style have a limited amount of spare cash, running both at once risks neither pulling in enough money (and if they do fund, funding to a lower more risky level)

third one project at a time gives more scope for fixing problems (eg how well rackhams style sculpts respond to whatever medium/plastic they end up using). with 2 projects needing time slots at a factory, or factories there's a lot more pressure to push ahead with something thats not quite right rather than taking the time to resculpt (or re-size stuff to account for shrinkage)
