Leagues of Votann: Aurora Kin

This army is born from my love for Alaska, where I lived for several years. It's the only place that I've loved and that I picked for myself.

I was trying to come up with a color scheme for a Leagues of Votann army, and purple is my favorite color. I didn't want to pair it with yellow, so I started thinking about a triadic scheme: purple, green, and orange. Then it hit me: What is purple and green? Auroras! Orange could be the glow of a lantern! Those are all vivid colors, so the remaining colors should be dark to keep the miniature from offending the eyes, and you see auroras at night so bright colors with dark surroundings is thematic. You also see auroras in the winter, so they should have snow bases. I like how the Greater Thurian League swaps its colors around, so I could have some units that are purple-dominant and others that are green-dominant, and it might look like bands of color moving across the tabletop. And why I am basecoating, washing, layering, and highlighting a miniature when I could just basecoat with the shade color, layer, then highlight?

At least those were my thoughts going into this test miniature. It didn't quite work out, and I am definitely open to suggestions for improvements!

I started another test miniature, which is going to have a dark purple undersuit and that same bright green armor - but I am going to try glazing the armor for better transitions. What I want for this scheme is an "aurora in a night sky" feeling, so I think that this belt and holster are too warm and bright. I am going to try painting all the leather the same dark grey color, and I am going to try a dark copper instead of that brass, which is too pale, for the weapon accents. And I'll be using washes this time.

I hope to be spending a lot of time with this color scheme, so I want to dial it in then work on painting with something approaching speed and regularity. Maybe this blog will help.
