The Legiones Astartes Land Raider Proteus on the other hand I think would make a really cool Venerable Land Raider for my Adeptus Custodes.

The issue is: The two Land Raiders aren't exactly the same size. Am I hurting myself if I choose to use the smaller vehicle?

Worth mentioning it's not -just- smaller. It's shorter, but the substantial ground clearance on the tracks means the 30k land raider has a quite bit higher profile, making it visible over some obstacles.

If you are playing in a WH store, check with the guy running it. As long as it’s an official GW model, should not be a problem. But if he’s had issues with 3D prints and recasts, he might have a bee in his bonnet.

It shouldn’t be an issue. Most people are just happy to get a game in. The slight differences in size are not going to impact the game as much as the mood of your dice. But hypothetically there could be people out there. So we can’t give you a 100% certain answer.

Yep. You can. I was just worried if there might be a issue with its footprint.

I plan on picking up a 30k Rhino for my Sisters if Silence... it's strangely cheaper than the 40k one.

(I kinda wish I could find the really old Land Raider or Rhino. I know they are super tiny. You want my advice on how to save that model? Start playing Orcs and modify it into a battle wagon, it's already got the ork architecture built in from the solar radiation that gave super cancer to the necrons

You know, that’s not a horrible idea. It’s been collecting dust for a while, on my to do eventually list. But with some orks incoming with the new 11th box…

I 100% thought this was an Ork conversion or something you sculpted yourself. Accidental melting makes a lot of sense, but wow, it's basically unrecognisable! That hurts.

LR Proteus that had the exact same footprint as the 40K LR? That should satisfy most nitpickers..

Another option would be to use the legends LR Proteus datasheet, then they'd have no excuse (AFAIK Legends are allowed for non-tourney games)

I am personally going to be using a Spartan fitted with dual lascannon sponsons as a "counts as 40K Land Raider". Anyone not cool with it, I wont be playing them. Rule of cool trumps all

As for Rhinos, both 30K and 40K Rhinos have the exact same footprint, so use whichever looks the best to you. You can even kitbash both together for custom variants, say, by using the "wrong" front hatch pieces

So if there is a question about LoS, how many models can reach it, will it fit, etc think about if being the wrong size would make a difference, and rule in way that’s favorable to the person you are playing.

It will probably not even come up. might have to put a deff roller on the front to make it size a bit better, but other than that, dimensionally it's practically perfect.

40k isn't a computer game, it is a toy soldier game, where at one point they encouraged you to modify, build your own, and kitbash. Nothing I own is obsolete.

Yes they would. They absolutely would. The size of the models changes in this game with updates all the time, and this is not a huge difference. That is the definition of unreasonable. It's a toy tank that, GW made, that represents a legacy model in a universe in which legacy models are revered as "venerable."

My experience is also that people in the real world recognize the difference between using older or alternate models versus trying to cheesily eke out a competitive advantage. You can even do things like play with old models that aren't on the current base size (shock! horror!) and just make a point not to exploit the difference, and I find most folks are completely fine with that.

If you do run into someone who refuses a game on the basis of a minor dimensional discrepancy from the Official Citadel Miniature, that's their right. The reality is a messy, "no one actually cares but if you want to be absolutely certain you won't end up in a situation where someone decides they can't be a functioning human about it, these are the most official rules on the matter that if followed you should be covered by." 1) They very well may have marching orders from on-high concerning mixing model lines, using Legends units, using proxies, 3d prints, paint, etc etc etc.
