This looks cool - but have you considered using clear plastic for the rings, then leaving the innermost part unpainted, so there's a seeming gap between the planet and the ring system? :) |

@Casbyness, that is an acrylic clear disc. That planet is a styrofoam ball that I cut in half and the acrylic disc is a solid piece with the two halves glued to it.
I drilled a small hole in the exact center of the disc and put a small, round-headed bolt through it and a nut on the other side to pinch it, then I put it on a metal shelf, bolt head down. I spun the disc like a top and used various thinned shades of browns and yellows and just loaded a brush, then lightly touched the spinning disc. It made almost perfect rings. I did it on the clear acrylic, so one coat showed on both sides. |
