Unit Photos

My HQ with two additional AT Teams, i modelled the full HQ so I can add and take away as required.

My main infantry platoons are Lehr Panzergrenadiers, I field two of these full platoons (although I occasionally reduce to two sections in each platoon) . I have to have special mention to Owen, at the following link http://www.farfaraway.org/blog/2009/08/08/panzer-lehr-gepanzerte-panzergrenadiers-painting-guide/ I have shamelessly copied his guide, with some minor alterations. I use alot of Ogryn Flesh combined with Middlestone for my vehicles and my troops and then rather than using Dark/ strong tone quickshade, I use the light tone one and let a thin coat of Ogryn flesh wash add some shading prior to my Painting on Quickshade, then once dry I use a Dry brush (On vehicles) and then Dullcote my Mini's, job done.

My Motorised HMG team is a very useful addition and give my Infantry some bite in defense, and often helps in assaults pinning the enemy down.

12cm Mortars which I got after advice from Dreager96. One of them is a bit skew (doh) but it is glued and based so I will live with it. I am looking forward to using them offensively and also in defence of other units with their ability to lay smoke, plus they get a special rule in the German Section so I would be stupid to ignore them.

My Command Transports

Opel Trucks can be used as Transports for a Pioneer unit, also as extra's for towing various Guns and such plus they were cheap so I picked up 5 and painted them up.

More 251's, I still need to finish these and then add in a at least another 15 for all the options of my Lehr Company kampfgruppe so I can have a Battalion sized force based around 3 Companies of 2 Full Platoons each and eventually 3 Platoons in each.

My 88 Platoon painted as Luftwaffe unit not as a Lehr unit, it seemed more appropriate and means i can use them with different forces.

My little Recon Platoon, Need to replace the lead vehicle with a Radio Car. I also aspire to get some Puma's as they are Cheap and fairly effective.

Good old Panzerwerfers, Shoot and scoot before the Counter batteryfire strikes. Plus with the extra troops upgrade the ROF upgrade is nice.

My Panzer IV's a solid and cheap unit, (These are the plastic Soldier Company). Nothing special, but I will be replacing them with Panther A's, which is one of the advantages of running a Panzer Lehr Division Kampfgruppe. I aim to buy more Plastic Soldier Company panther models.

Jagdpanzer IV's are a solid choice, reasonably cheap and very effective so long as you keep their Flanks and Rears secure and avoid being assaulted by enemy infantry. Funny thing being a Platoon is only 4 units, you cannot field 5. I have no idea why but there is probably some historic reason why not.

My Tigers, based on Michael Wittmanns Tiger unit, hence the commander is in 212. I wasn't paying for the special boxed set so I bought a basic Tiger 1E and added a Tank Commander from the Plastic Soldier Company. Viola Michael Wittmann. Obviously for Panzer Lehr these guys are a Schwere Panzer Allied unit and not strictly part of the LEHR DIVISION. That said, it allows me to field a second Army made up of 5 x Tigers (Awesomeness in armoured form) and a support unit of some kind. I just love the look of a Tiger, it's got very strong lines and looks imposing and dangerous. Where as the Sherman (despite being a good tank) looks a bit weak.

Army List

Headquarters

HQ Panzergrenadier 65pts

Combat Platoons

Panzergrenadier Lehr Platoon (3 Sections) 280pts

Panzergrenadier Lehr Platoon (3 Sections) 280pts

Weapons Platoons

12cm Mortar Platoon (2 Sections) 150pts

Divisional Support

Schwere SS-Panzer Platoon 2 x Tiger I E 480pts

Tank-hunter Lehr Platoon 3 x Jagdpanzer IV 285pts

Armoured Rocket Launcher Battery 3 x Panzerwerfer 42 (5+ crew) + 5cm PaK40 gun 210pts

Company Points: 1750pts

The list above is not as diverse as it could be, this is based around my use of full size Grenadier Platoons, This limits my options as I sink over 560points into these two Platoons alone. However with 12 MG's and Numerous Panzershrecks they are quite a prickly unit to deal with. An Alternate List against Heavy Armour or massed Armour (e.g. Russian Tank Horde) trades off 1 section in each platoon to gain a full platoon of 88's with the ROF upgrade. That said, I need to watch for enemy counter battery fire, so my Panzerwerfer's will be slamming/ smoking anything that gets close, and the 12cm Mortar section can help with smoke screens or hitting non-armoured units.

Why I Started This Army

When I joined the Flames of War fraternity, a German Army appealed to me. I thought initially of an SS unit, but I rapidly discovered the PANZER LEHR DIVISION in the Earth and Steel Book. Their unique colours and Uniforms, organisation and TOE makes them a formidable force without needing to descend to the points cost and limitations of an SS unit. I have however added a further amount of backbone by adding 2 x Tiger 1E from the Schwere Panzer Abteilung (based on Michael Wittmans unit of Tigers so I can use them in Tigers Marsch scenarios).

The Panzer Lehr Division is special as it was essentially a Teaching/ Instructional duties/ Demonstration unit. It was made up of the Creme de la Creme of the wehrmacht, well motivated and very well equipped the Infantry has access to lots of cheap AT weapons and alot of transport units. The size of Panzergrenadier Platoons, combined with their massed MG's and AT weapons makes them an all round unit. The ability to field Jagdpanzer IV's, Panther A's and Panzer IV's makes and also allied Schwere platoons makes the armour options very attractive, also the myriad of combinations and allies makes them extremely flexible Battlegroup.

I have quite a large Company now, so I am looking at expanding it by having another 4 full Platoons, this should give me 3 Companies so I could effectively say it is Battalion by adding in some nice Senior Officer Model with some staff and a few Transports and Cars.
