Leman Russ WIP

I'm working on my first Leman Russ now, just a regular battle tank (also have a demolisher on deck)

Got a lot of comments and ideas in my Hellhound thread a lil while ago, so I'm wondering what some of you folks think of this one so far?

I never did add anything new to my Hellhounds, instead I wanted to try from scratch with this one and if I like it try add some stuff to em later, since they're pretty much done enough right now I want to get the unpainted stuff all finished first.

Not the greatest pics, but here ya go..

Is the big red & gray front panel too much? Is the gray stripe too distracting? I used a lot of very light black ink washes and streaks to make it look old and dirty, still have some more to do so it doesn't look so "paintbrushed" in some spots.. and of course a lot more detail, tons of damage and the dusty dirty bottoms. I checked out my hobby store and never found and good dirt/weathering materials. I'd love it to look like there's caked on dirt on the bottom and the treads, but I'm not gluing flock to it because that will look stupid. So I'm still wondering if I should keep trying to do something for that or just leave it more "plain" like the hellhounds.

Anyway, any thoughts?

Hey Necros,

Love the Red and Grey! I also like the dry-brushing. Gives the tank a beaten-metal sort of look.

Beautifull tank, finish it!

Cilithan out...

Hey Necros

More brilliant work as always. The banding on the front of the Russ is right on. Actually I'ts not too bright if anything I'd say its too dark! The Grey stripe (due to your grey weathering of the black) looks alot like the normal hull colour. I'd stick some stronger light grey in there, maybe a bit of fortress or some "dirty" skull white mixed with inks. I think that making this more of a noticably different colour to the main hull would be fine.

Or maybe you should just darken down the grey weathering on the black with a few light washes of Chaos black watered down rather heavily. This would tone down the hull and make the main colour much darker, allowing you to leave the grey as it is.

I think if you compare this tank to your Hellhounds its much greyer overall and the colours seem rather different.

Any plans to add stowage as we discussed before?

Hi Necros

Heres a link to a online store who sell weathering powders http://www.transportmodels.co.uk/index.php

They are UK based. Quire cheap only £2.60 per powder. I just ordered some myself to try out and will let you know how they go and how they are to use. I've never used them myself but figured I'd give it a try as an alternative. They have loads of great materials on that site. Also cut plastic letters and numbers for sticking on trains and tanks and plastic rod etc.

Lookin good and very World War One-ish. Are ya gonna mud it up or no? That would add a nice contrast to the grey/red scheme. The best weathering materials I've found are a mix of brown/neutral chalks, paint and inks plus a little fine sand/dirt glued on as clumps of mud.

RE: Leman Russ WIP

The tank is actually a lot blacker than it looks here... it's more like that last Hellhound I did... and I didn't add any other details like the bare metal showing through in the cracks and bullet holes and stuff.

On my hellhounds I just kind of dusted/drybrushed some browns along the bottom for dirt.. it looks ok (better in person than in the pics) but I'd like to see clumps of dirt actually on it.. so maybe I'll try and mix up something. I do have spackle for my TK bases so maybe that will work if I put some on in little spots in the treads and seal it in with some glue then paint over it?
