What to get after Necron battleforce

My shiny new Necron battleforce just arrived in the mail and I'm jazzed over it, but after reading the codex I'm in a bit of a quandry over what to get next. A monolith is a given, and I was leaning toward some Pariahs and Immortals after that. What about wraiths and heavy destroyers, or flayed ones? Any input would be appreciated.

Re:What to get after Necron battleforce

Well, I played my first game with the Necron. Here was the list:

Lord w/warscythe, Rez Orb
12 Warriors
12 Warriors
10 Warriors
7 Scarabs
3 Destroyers

Played against a CSM army; we were using the old 4th ed codex for them, since this was the first 5th ed game for both of us and we were more interested in getting a handle on the rules. I lost, mainly due to the CSM's saves (we were playing Annihilation, so he beat me 2 kp to 0), but I had whittled down his army considerably and WBB was driving him crazy. He killed at least one of my destroyers every turn and they made every roll!

Now, I have to figure out what I want to get next.
What to get after Necron battleforce

Like many armies, Necrons are good when you pick one strong thing and try to max it out. It's even more important for Necrons because they We'll Be Back rule requires them to have like types around to use it. If you don't have the like types, you're still paying the points for survivability you don't have.

Take a Monolith? No. Take three.
Destroyers? Take 15, and then take 9 Heavy Destroyers just for effect.
Scarabs? Ooooo, those are nice. Take 30, and make sure they have Disruption Fields.
Heck, even a mass of 9 Tomb Spyders can be good and really catch people off guard. (i wish i had this one myself)

Clearly you can't do all these at once. Pick your poison and go for it.

Immortals are good units, but I don't think they're the no brainer in 5th that they were in 4th because of the new scoring units rules.

If you do a Destroyer heavy list, you want to squeeze a Solar Pulse into it somewhere. With 1/3rd of games being Night Fight for the first turn, and the speed and range of Destroyers, it's a HUGE boon to your force.

Don't take Pariahs. They suck. SUCK! Wraiths too. They also SUCK harsh. It's a shame too, because they're cool units that I would love to field. And I've tried to, repeatedly, but they never work out well. Immortals are pretty much always going to be a better buy than Pariahs. Scarabs are pretty much always a better buy than Wraiths.

Whatever you take, spread it out over your Force Org slots as much as possible. Ie, take two units of five Immortals, not one unit of ten. That way if they wipe the unit of five, you can still get back up into the near-by (you are keep your like types near each other right?) unit of five. Don't worry about Kill Points. Necrons are expensive enough that you'll seldom give up many more Kill Points than your opponent even when you spread way out on the Force Org chart.

edit: Oh, and chop the War Scythe off your Lord and give him a Staff of Light. If he's getting into combat, you're in a lot more trouble than being able to ignore Invulnerable saves is going to help you get out of, while the staff has some nice AP3 fire power, albeit short ranged. The fact that a staff is free while a scythe costs points is just gravy.

What to get after Necron battleforce

Wraiths are still somewhat usefull, but not so much as they were in 4th ed with the old FAQ, where you were able to pull off a first round assault out of monoliths. Right now, if you take 2-3 units, you have a quick moving speedbump, something that can move and contest objectives last round (ignoring all terrain while moving 24" isn't something to completely discard), or tieing up a dreadnought if you desperately need to. Oh, if you're going to be doing cityfight, then they're usefull. They'd be better if they had more attacks, or rending or powerweapons, but anything that completely ignores terrain, and can get to snipers or other critical targets really fast, are very much worth it. Outside of city fight, not as much.

I love Pariahs, I've taken them fairly often, but only rarely to a tournament. The only one I'd seriously consider bringing them to is a cityfight tournament, as their morale damaging effect doesn't worry about LOS, theirs lots of cover and terrain that actually does block LOS, and if you can lock someone in combat with wraiths or swarms, then you have a chance to give that terminator squad of doom a really bad day. Mostly though, for 10 pariahs you could instead have 20 warriors, that do get back up, and raise your Phase-out up quite a bit.

With the change to targeting in 5th a small squad of pariahs might not be a bad option as a Counter assault unit to those thunder hammer toting termmies, or really any unit.

beyond that the pariahs have the same gun as an immortal so they can still lay down a decent amount of shots a turn, I know they aren't necrons but there maybe a place for them in the current enviromnet

Re:What to get after Necron battleforce

Honestly? Buy another battleforce. Or, if money permits, and you can still find one, pick up the Warrior Phalanx.

Then pick up some Immortals (in multiples of 10), or even another Battleforce.

The best thing about Necrons is that while they may have a weak codex, they are one of the few armies where their preboxed army deals actually provide you with nothing but fieldable, competitive units.

I would also advise holding off on purchasing any pariahs, flayed ones and tomb spiders. Pariahs and flayed ones just plain suck (scarabs are better counter charge) and while Tomb Spiders are fun, they take a lot of finesse to play

What to get after Necron battleforce

Just my $0.02... but I think scarabs are AWESOME, and they won't count towards your phase-out when you lose some of them, so they're good for tying up enemy close combat units while you get where you need to go with your foot slogging warriors!

Just my $0.02 I would also partially agree with Aduro above, that it is more effective to max out on one aspect of your army (although hopefully not in a cheesy, 3-monolith kind of way .
All the advice has been great and hopefully will help me pick up some wins in the future. Except for tournaments I don't really put winning before having fun, so I might get some of the les popular units just for kicks. It's a shame that the models for the Wraiths, Pariahs and Flayed Ones are so cool if the models themselves don't perform so well on the field.
