How about take a layer of wood glue over the base, exept for a circle at a random spot to represent a puddle, then dip it in sand. then take a very fine layer of wood glue over the sand and in the puddle. When that has dried you could try to make a splash in the puddle, if the model have a running pose for example. If you didn't already know it, wood glue turns transparent when it dries. With a good paintjob on that and a coat of gloss I think that would look really muddy.
I have never done it before, but thats how I would have give it my first shot.
And green stuff is really sticky and hard to work with if you don't moist it a bit first.

And about the death korps... I would choose the color brown for their masks and black for their coats, cuz I like the way they resemble old russian officers. But I think you should go for whatever you think looks best

doubleT said:

Thanks, guys.

Yeah, love the mud. At first it was a little hard to cover them in mud because they look good without the mud, too. And I was worried to overdo it. But I will try to do one or two squads with more mud. Engineers and Grenadiers are really going to get dirty!

Leigen_Zero wrote:Could you please tell me how you did that fantastic mud basing, as in the textures and paint scheme you used?

Mud receipt:

- Wood glue, a few drops of water, fine sand, and ... drumroll ... saw dust.
- mix it and cover the base with it
- wait fot the mud to dry, then paint it Bestial Brown. At this stage it'll look really ugly.
- Wash with Devlan Mud, maybe some Badab Black in deeper areas.
- The Edge of the base is painted Scorched Brown and washed with Badab Black

You should check out the thread http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/314300.page

A mix of that and air dry clay can create a good mud effect.

+1 for skipping the GS, altogether. There are numerous ways to do mud that I've seen tutorials for and nearly all of them are cheaper and will probably end up looking better. A quick dakka or google search for tutorials should give you plenty of different methods to test out, but I'd look no further than doubleT's DKoK blog, linked above.

mix sand with PVA glue (and a little water). It behaves like mud, because, well, it IS mud. The only difference is that it dries as hard as concrete.
