Vulcan's hit the nail on the head. Since your Black Guard are also your likely target for the 5+ ward from your cauldron anyway, which makes him more durable.

A 5+ save doesn't save as many of your troops as removing bodies from the enemy 50% faster does.

This is just the best way to get him a decent save in close combat before the other side ganks him.

Strikes last on a 250 point T3 4+/6+ model - the best you can get in the remaining magical allowance (Blood Armor aside) - is a death sentence. You have to get him swinging in I order to get any use out of him at all.
