The Lair of Vengeance....Poole.

How aggressive should I play this guy, I've been looking at him more and more recently, but the 4+ armour to start with makes me very tentative with him.

Malifaux masters owned: Guild(Sans McCabe), Outcasts(Sans Misaki), Arcanists(Sans Marcus)

The best way to run him is with Blood Armor (+1 armor per wound inflicted) in a unit of Black Guard with the ASF banner.

That way he swings that Axe on I 8 and does a truckload of wounds early, bringing his armor save down to 1+ before they swing back.

Vulcan's hit the nail on the head. Since your Black Guard are also your likely target for the 5+ ward from your cauldron anyway, which makes him more durable.

Watch him hack through any monster, or knights with ease. He is the bane of Ogres!

The 5+ ward is almost irrelevant for the Axe Lord. The 2+ LOS is in effect during the approach battle, then you switch the Blessing over to the extra attack in close combat - the faster you chew through the enemy unit, the fewre casualties you take. A 5+ save doesn't save as many of your troops as removing bodies from the enemy 50% faster does.

This is just the best way to get him a decent save in close combat before the other side ganks him.

Strikes last on a 250 point T3 4+/6+ model - the best you can get in the remaining magical allowance (Blood Armor aside) - is a death sentence. You have to get him swinging in I order to get any use out of him at all. And the best way to do that is with the one infantry unit (since the Axe cannot be used mounted) that an take the ASF banner.
