They were pretty stalwart but not quite as dismal as the later Death Guard recuited from Mortarions homeworld. As far as combat roles, you should remember that Legions are not Chapters. The Legions were huge and each of them could do just about anything. They did not need to specialize.

I didn't mean that he was a dusk raider at the time of the heresy i just said that he was a member of the dusk raiders before they became the death guard and form my information he was one of the 5 astartes that founded the grey knights.
