[Necron] Veiling Storm-teks

The Harbinger Of The Storm is one if the best Cryptek options Necrons have access to. The only downside the Haywire stick has is its short reach (12").
Usually I like to get my Stortm-teks up nice and close via pinpoint Nightscythe insertion with a small unit of Warriors, which typically works great.
Two problems, though:
1- They won't come on until turn 2+ (meaning if your opponent's got some long range guns on the table from the start of the game, there's nothing you can do about it).
2- Once they drop, they tend to stay where they were (yeah, they might be able to get back in the Nightscythe the turn after and fly off somewhere else, but if there's another vehicle behind them, there's not much you can do).

So the other option would be to include a HQ with the ability to Veil them around (either a Despair-tek, or Obyron).
By going this route, not only could you potentially pop enemy vehicles from turn 1, but you could easily go after several vehicles once the initial target is taken care of, AND, so long as you attach him to a Troop unit, you can Veil them off to the other side of the table to capture/contest once turn 5 rolls around.
The downside would be opening yourself up to deepstrike mishaps, but as you only really need to be 12" away from whatever vehicle you're hunting, so long as you can find a relatively open spot about 6-8" from the target, it shouldn't be too bad.

Now, seeing as how I would like them to be able to take and hold objectives later in the game, I'm thinking Immortals would be better suited for the role of accompanying unit (Gauss Immortals, in case the Storm-tek rolls two 1s and needs some emergency glancing 6s to back him up).
As for Veiling options, Obyron's obviously got his benefits, but the downside is his price.
A Despair-tek might be cheaper, but aside from lesser defensive capabilities, there's the issue of needing a second Overlord level HQ to attach both Crypteks to the same unit (and yes, you could just have the Crypteks all stay together as a Royal Court unit to get around that problem, but this removes your ability to score late game... though, I guess you could still contest).
One pro the Despair-tek would have going for him is the ability to take the Nightmare Shroud. This under-used piece of wargear forces morale checks. If used properly, you can end up forcing backfield heavy weapon teams to run off the table edge. Sending your opponent's Long Fangs packing before they even have a chance to fire once is a glory you will not soon forget.

Anyway, here are the unit options I was considering:

Obyron
Storm-tek (Lightning Field)
10 Immortals (Gauss)
= 365

Storm-tek (Lightning)
Despair-tek (Veil, Shroud)
10 Immortals
= 275

Could reduce the number of Immortals, and remove the Lightning, but as I want this unit to survive as long as they can, I figure I need more metal boots on the ground.

Might as well consider the "Storm-Court", too,

Storm-tek (Lightning)
Storm-tek (Lightning)
Despair-tek (Veil, Shroud)
= 140

... actually, considering the cheapest you can get a Stormscythe for is 195 (1 Storm-tek + 5 Warriors in Nightscythe), the Storm-Court doesn't seem too bad.
(only problem would be, if you're planning on running other Crypteks in your army, this would severely limit you).

Thoughts?

The "storm-Court" sounds like a terrible option imho. 3 models jumping in with the statlines of Warriors are dead or running next turn, and they will blow up 1, maybe 2 vehicles?

The unit of
Storm-Tek
Veil-Tek
10 Immortals/10 Warriors
will be able to do more damage, and survive long enough to jump out to a new spot to hit a new vehicle.

Fair enough. I only included the option out of completion's sake (I tend to run multiple D&D squads, so I didn't really have the Crypteks to spare, anyway).

But yes, the middle option seems like it might actually be useful... only problem is needing that second Overlord (I usually run a Destroyer Lord as my second HQ, so that means I'll have to change things up).
I'll test it out and see how it goes.

If I were going to run this, I would go with the second unit. I don't run this myself, becuase the last 20 DS I have done have scattered 9+ inches ( the dice gods do not want me to DS units or use blast weapons for that matter)

I never run Obyron without Nemesor and in this set up I never run Obyron in such a key unit. An assault on Nemesor would pull your DS out of the unit. I will give him this, at least you can DS away if you get assaulted. Which will likely happen.

The pure royal court just would never fit into anything I run. I use far to many teks in other units to allow them to sit in a court by themselves. Plus what RivenSkull mentioned. They would likely die the turn you DS them next to anything. When you pop a transport, you will be fighting whatever comes out.. well if they don't shoot you down.. you will likely get assaulted.

The storm court is actually a lot better as 2 storm teks and the despair tek for 110pts.

Don't bother with the lightning since they will be shot down in the shooting phase anyway.

For 110pts its a pretty good unit that will take out your opponents heaviest armour target turn 1. Plus even when its killed statistically 1 of the 3 get back up to either put another couple HP of damage down or port and flame some unit with the ap1 flamer. The cheap suicide court will almost always make its points back or more.

I guess, for an alpha strike kamikaze unit that SHOULD reliably take out your opponent's best tank AND possibly get you firstblood, you could do a lot worse than a 110 point Storm-Court...
(though, maybe the extra 10 points for the Nightmare Shroud wouldn't be too bad. At least it would make the Despair-tek somewhat useful)

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Roci wrote:
An assault on Nemesor would pull your DS out of the unit.

Whenever I run Zahndrekh, he's usually leading a brick of 20 Warriors. They trudge slowly up the field, so by the time they would be assaulted, Obyron's unit should have made it's way through a few vehicles and would probably be camping out on an objective by that point, so him veiling away shouldn't be too bad.
... but still, that's a hell of a lot of points for an anti-vehicle deathstar.
Maybe if I was playing a mech heavy army, I'd consider it, otherwise option #2 (or a cheap bare-bones disposable #3) would be the better bet.
