The problem is consistency. If you are painting a lot of models, you will see the sizes and shapes of the blob start to morph as you got tired or better at painting them or whatnot.

Tau splinter camouflage is based on WW2 Luftwaffe splinter patterns.

You can freehand it with a brush but it's really easy to do with masking tape and an airbrush.

The main thing is if you want to get the pattern the same on every vehicle of the same type, which is what modern forces do. That prevents the enemy from knowing exactly which vehicle they are looking at.
