Frank Corti, 72, who served with the Royal Engineers in North Africa from 1956-58, dodged the knife and punched Gregory McCalium, 23, twice in the face, giving him a black eye and a swollen lip. He then restrained the attacker until police arrived.

McCalium, a barman, was given a four-and-a-half year prison sentence at Oxford Crown Court on Monday for aggravated burglary and was told by the judge he had "got what he deserved".

The court heard Mr Corti was at home in Botley, Oxford, with his wife Margaret, 72, when McCalium, a neighbour, forced his way in at 8am on Aug 19 last year. McCalium was drunk.

Speaking after the case, Mr Corti said: "I was scared when he first drew the knife, but my old training must have kicked in because I just punched him as hard as I could and he went down like a sack of spuds. If you can't defend what's yours, where are we at?"

McCalium had denied the charge and claimed he could not remember what happened.

HOUSTON - Around 4 a.m. Thursday, a man who does not want to be identified, said his brother was robbed by six men with guns at a Denny's restaurant off the Gulf Freeway in southeast Houston.

"I don't know if it was random or someone set him up. Because he got his own label," said the victim's brother.

His brother's wife was in the restroom at the time, but when she got out she saw the group of robbers. Police said that's when she pulled out her gun and shot at them.

Police said there was a shoot out, but it is not known how many shots were fired at the time. However, police said the gunshots hit cars in the parking lot.

No bystanders or customers were injured.

The group of suspects fled the scene.

The married couple is still shook up, but their family said they're glad they made it out alive.

"Self-defense saved my brother's life," he said.

According to police, they robbers got away with jewelry.

Realistically and leaving the bravado aside, what do you guys think you would do in that situation?

Im obviously from Ireland so no home defense guns involved and before I moved out, my parents are quite old and fragile being honest!
VS a well "motivated" gang, isnt the best thing to do capitulate? They are looking for money/cash/credit cards, realistically they dont want to escalate it to GBH/murder(?).

Being 100% honest a few years ago I'd have awnsered "I'd grab a kitchen knife and fight them one VS 5" but for the sake of some insurance and a broken arm (and parents lives), not better to capitulate and *hope" the cops get them?

Personally, I think that the gangs like what you posted about in Ireland, are a vast minority of crime to your average person.

From a pure media perspective they usually happen against people that are well known to the gang (local banker, jeweler, "rich person", isolated couple that are well known in the area). the gang has planned it well and know who/what they are hitting.
Look we're 4 million of a pop VS 300 mil in the US - the potential for random crazy in the US is much higher - agreed.

But my basic point stands: If you were an EU citizen with no firearm or limited "weaponry" what would you do?

Rhinos are pretty much immune to anything you can carry by hand and are pretty resistant 50cal which will penetrate their skin but not much else. You have to shoot them in the eyes. Or with 50cal the head
Bears can run faster than race horses and lift 1ton boulders. They're pretty much nature's superhumans.

Honestly I dont know mate. I personally think it comes down to, like i said, that initial view of the people involved. I heard poachers just hunt rhinos with a Jeep. According to a special I saw on illegal rhino hunting, the 'most efficient' way to hunt the rhino is to chase them in an off-road vehicle (they will panic and run) until they die of system shock. (Which doesn't take too long. I guess they have weak hearts or something.)

Actually, Mythbusters tested this. It doesn't work. Muscle will not save you. Fat will not save you. Not getting hit in a critical area will.
