Frank Corti, 72, who served with the Royal Engineers in North Africa from 1956-58, dodged the knife and punched Gregory McCalium, 23, twice in the face, giving him a black eye and a swollen lip. He then restrained the attacker until police arrived.
McCalium, a barman, was given a four-and-a-half year prison sentence at Oxford Crown Court on Monday for aggravated burglary and was told by the judge he had "got what he deserved".
The court heard Mr Corti was at home in Botley, Oxford, with his wife Margaret, 72, when McCalium, a neighbour, forced his way in at 8am on Aug 19 last year. McCalium was drunk.
Speaking after the case, Mr Corti said: "I was scared when he first drew the knife, but my old training must have kicked in because I just punched him as hard as I could and he went down like a sack of spuds. If you can't defend what's yours, where are we at?"
McCalium had denied the charge and claimed he could not remember what happened.

HOUSTON - Around 4 a.m. Thursday, a man who does not want to be identified, said his brother was robbed by six men with guns at a Denny's restaurant off the Gulf Freeway in southeast Houston.
"I don't know if it was random or someone set him up. Because he got his own label," said the victim's brother.
His brother's wife was in the restroom at the time, but when she got out she saw the group of robbers. Police said that's when she pulled out her gun and shot at them.

Sometimes badassery doesn't even have to involve anyone being injured.
Back in 2006 a group mugged David Copperfield and two of his assistants. The women were made to empty their purses, but Copperfield used sleight of hand to show his pockets were empty, despite holding his wallet, passport and cell phone.
A cursory refresher indicates the suspects were snagged within the hour and all the women's possessions were returned.

If this story was set six years ago I would not want to take bets as to which person stood to serve time in prison.

Clearly Copperfield should have been arrested for fraud and shunned from nice society for ungentlemanly conduct.
Why?
If he was a real wizard like he claims he would have killed them with Necromantic touch or d6 fireballs.

Unfortunately the thieves had combat advantage and Mr. Copperfield barely passed his interaction roll.
I've been on other forums where stories like this pop up.
Realistically and leaving the bravado aside, what do you guys think you would do in that situation?
Im obviously from Ireland so no home defense guns involved and before I moved out, my parents are quite old and fragile being honest!
VS a well "motivated" gang, isnt the best thing to do capitulate? They are looking for money/cash/credit cards, realistically they dont want to escalate it to GBH/murder(?).
Being 100% honest a few years ago I'd have awnsered "I'd grab a kitchen knife and fight them one VS 5" but for the sake of some insurance and a broken arm (and parents lives), not better to capitulate and *hope" the cops get them?
Dont get me wrong, I dont agree "gunz n more gunz" are the solution but do wish sometimes Ireland had a home gun owner law. Parents are too sacred.
Im 34 by the way, not some young MMA whipper-snapper or ex commando
edit: recently a gang in Ireland raided a well known shop owners home, all armed with shotguns, tied him down and literally stuck a shotgun in his babies face. There is only one reaction to that, I think we agree: Give them whatever they want on the spot, no matter whatever.

Personally, I think that the gangs like what you posted about in Ireland, are a vast minority of crime to your average person.
However, this article is what one can expect when capitulating to the demands of criminals:
Good on him. Just goes to show you don't need a gun to defend yourself
A gun is much different than a knife. Even with proper training, your chances to survive against an armed enemy are tiny.
If you're a worlds strongest man contestant you can have the bullets bounce off your foot thick pecs and abs.
This actually depends on a lot of things but for the most part if someone is pointing a gun at your head this is true.
Finally found my quote from a gym buddy born and raised in South Korea:
"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.
"It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
"It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
"It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."
Personally, I think that the gangs like what you posted about in Ireland, are a vast minority of crime to your average person.
Fully agree EF.
From a pure media perspective they usually happen against people that are well known to the gang (local banker, jeweler, "rich person", isolated couple that are well known in the area). the gang has planned it well and know who/what they are hitting.
Look we're 4 million of a pop VS 300 mil in the US - the potential for random crazy in the US is much higher - agreed.
But my basic point stands: If you were an EU citizen with no firearm or limited "weaponry" what would you do?
Even against a lone assailant, no bravado now. The options are, well you know the options.

No. Muscle is muscle and I don't care how much of it you have the bullet will find a resting place within.
4-6 inches (this is impossible for a .22, and more in line with a 9mm) in the foot thick abs or pecs a large distance away from any organs.
Deers are pretty resistant to .22 which isn't to mention things like Bears or Rhinos.

You said bounce. I want to see you bounce a bullet. I want to see anyone bounce a bullet with their fancy ab muscles. Furthermore, what creature has foot thick abs?
Not only that, if you think a bullet getting stuck in your muscles(or, more likely, going through) is nothing, think again.

Lone assailant, I take my chances, maybe even 2 people. But it all comes down to that initial contact... What do i see in their eyes as soon as I can see them?
I dunno EF, different world over here He might have a shotgun (over here, you wont).
If he has a knife, you might have a
They might be two VS you with knives and you have none.
Do you still trade blows with them for the sake of a bit of a beating and saving you (and your parents safety?)
As I said, its a different mentality/set of rules in the US Vs Ireland (speciifically). I'd love US law (to a degree!) over here but say you were me.
2vs1, no real weapons and they are in your parents room? Thats all Im trying to articulate. Is it worth going Rambo or letting them take the TV/credit card???

Rhinos are pretty much immune to anything you can carry by hand and are pretty resistant 50cal which will penetrate their skin but not much else. You have to shoot them in the eyes. Or with 50cal the head
Bears can run faster than race horses and lift 1ton boulders. They're pretty much nature's superhumans.
Bullets take a day or so to get infected and the damage they do to that level of muscle might not even leave permanent scar tissue depending on metabolism.

Honestly I dont know mate. I personally think it comes down to, like i said, that initial view of the people involved. I'd like to think that given that situation, I'd be able to spot the person who will get my insured crap and run, versus the guy who sees an easy target and will escalate to more than just a simple smash and grab.

I heard poachers just hunt rhinos with a Jeep. According to a special I saw on illegal rhino hunting, the 'most efficient' way to hunt the rhino is to chase them in an off-road vehicle (they will panic and run) until they die of system shock. (Which doesn't take too long. I guess they have weak hearts or something.)
ANYhoo...while I did indeed go through the 'gotta kill me sucka!' phase in my life, I've got a wife and a son now, and in a robbery situation, I'm not resisting unless resistance is required to protect my dependents from bodily harm. It's just not worth the possibility of my wife or child getting hurt to try and be a hero.

Actually, Mythbusters tested this. It doesn't work. Muscle will not save you. Fat will not save you. Not getting hit in a critical area will. Bears and rhinos have different anatomies than us that give far more speculation as to the location of the heart or it's major arteries.
