Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Greetings and welcome to my new PLog detailing the rise and fall of my new Space Marine army; the Warp Dragons.

This project has been a long time maturing (I bought their custom laser engraved bases from WarMill quite some time ago ) as I have been trying to trade for Terminator parts for quite some time without much success (and thank you to the people who did trade me some of the parts I needed - you have helped the cause immensely! ). I eventually broke down and ordered some Terminators from various sellers on ebay last week and they have now arrived!

The main fluff repository for the Warp Dragons can be found here, though I will also add fluff to this thread as I go along.

So, without further pause, the first step of my first experimental marine, Brother Halfas:

As you can see, I am using the traditional SM Terminator legs method, with regular SM chest and back plate spaced out with plasticard for the torso. These marines will stand approximately a head and shoulders above regular infantry models, making them about 7-8 ft high in "true scale".

And here is Brother Halfas showing off one of the bases he will be standing on:

The main reason I am posting this so early in the process is to allow for maximum feedback - I really want these guys to look great, both individually and as an army. There will be a few interesting developments along the way as I try and model some more heavily customised weapons, armour and tech (check out the fluff thread for details).

Those are sexy bases. I think true scale is very cool. I wish I had the balls and skill to try it. Looking forward to watching this progress.

Yep

I've got some stuff that I think will help make some awesome warp portals, but I will start work on those once I have a few marines made up and I have my technique down (you know, before I start getting a bit crazy with conversions etc).

Ok, managed to get sat down for a few minutes and added some torsos to some legs (which still need finishing off in a couple of cases, but I cut my thumb open (always cut on a mat - not in your hands ) so could not really use any GS).

So, here is my progress so far (greyscaled so that you get a better impression of what the model looks like without all the clashing colours ):

This will probably become my librarian - if not this model itself, then certainly parts of it. Made to look heavily battle damaged (need to rebuild his right foot as the legs that I used for him were used on a wounded Terminator in an earlier life)

This will be one of the squad leaders - need to shave the badge off the knee and finish off and finish filling in the armour plating.

Regular marine - need to chop off the knees and rebuild with a separate knee pad and fill in the armour bits.

More knee badge trimming required as well as mould line removal on the helmet and other touch up work.

Spent most of my free time trying to design the warp pack and had to give up in frustration. Suggestions more than welcome on this problem

Dammit Silver, i have 4 boxes of CSM terminators and Lords that are now demanding to be converted into true scale.

Looking sweet sir.

I like the method you are using. Straightforward, no buggering about.

Those running legs look sweet.

Hmmm, looks like my chaos deathwing may be getting a sudden change...

Hehe - Terminators must now be used to make True Scale Marines wherever they exist

I have to say that it is pretty easy - I have a few gaps to fill as I was still trying to figure out how to assemble them with these first ones but even now they look pretty sweet. Plus I am using so many random chest and back plates that don't actually fit together

Though I am still trying to figure out how to make the warp packs for them

Still going to be using the blood angels codex sir?

These going on 40mm bases guv?

Also... this would give me the opportunity to build an army around that FW renegade list... hmmm.

Have you built your FW dropship *thinks hard* Caestus?

It's so hard not to say CRASSUS when anything FW comes up.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD ANGELS!

Yep - BA based army, but fluff wise Salamanders descended.

These going on 40mm bases guv?

Nope, the standard infantry size bases. However, they are the custom engraved ones from WarMill so they do not have beveled edges making them have a slightly larger stop surface.

Also... this would give me the opportunity to build an army around that FW renegade list... hmmm.

That does sound sexy.

Not quite - I have primed half of it, and tested out my paint scheme on the spare hull section that FW very nicely sent me instead of the hull bit that I actually required

Nice, I may have to look at this 'warmill' of which you speak. I'm going to ponder upon this.

I like the use of the terminator arms on the librarian. I feel that regular marine arms work just as well mind you.

Fafnir made some epic looking jump pack ts marines (say that ten times fast!)

Also; the Warp Dragons may be getting some foul heretic enemies to deal with in the not so distant future...

WarMill make loads of awesome stuff - he (/they) posted after my first post and I linked to them in the first post too

Most of the "regular" marines are getting normal SM arms - I felt that the Librarian and other HQ units should be even beefier than the normal troops.

Yeah - his army is awesome

However, I am trying at the moment to combine jump packs with Warp Spider warp packs and it is harder than I thought to make something that looks both different enough from normal jump packs, but not too different

Also; the Warp Dragons may be getting some foul heretic enemies to deal with in the not so distant future...

That would be awesome

Shucks silver you say such nice things librarian's looking hot, very stabby-killy. Nice posing on the running marine too, I could picture him exploding through some guy who was stupid enough to stand in the way

Been doing some digging on true-scale marines.

Found this around the time of Fafnirs thread.

Super easy method, but looks amazing.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/292236.page

I actually built one of these guys up a few months ago from various bits I had lying around.

I highly recommend the above method.

I find that the torso is a little small with just using the regular marine torso however just using a little 1mm spacer makes all the difference.

And I always pimp WarMill wherever I can - you make such cool stuff - If I could I would have an entire table of your terrain, not to mention custom doors/armour plates etc

I am a lazy man, silver. The 1mm plasti-card spacing takes this conversion far too deep out of kit-bash territory for my liking!

I think Chaos gets away with the simple kit-bash compared to you; foul, blind, loyalist scum.

You can add more spikes and detailing to them to beef them up since they are chaos

Loyalists need to look more clean cut

Plus in the Eye of Terror, food eats you so they are bound to be slightly skinnier

I have 50 bases, so there will most probably be 50 guys; 5 HQ choices (1 lib, 1 DC HQ chap and some other misc ones that I will create as the mood strikes me), 5 IC's (4 sang priests, 1 Lemonartes (hehe ) of the DC ), 25 Assault Marines, 5 HQ guard chaps (forgotten the name), and 10 DC marines.

And thanks for the props - I should probably update my site at some point

Ok, after a long pause, I have started back on a little bit of true-scaling - generally adding arms, shoulder pads and things to the marines I have already made up, and also starting on some portal marines:

Still very much at an early stage - got to add in the rest of the marine before sculpting in ripples, grasping tendrils of the warp, claws of daemons, etc.

Also, to keep myself entertained, I have scrapped together some servo skulls - to reflect the relatively high tech nature of my marines (heavy bolter, autocannon, book holder (for the librarian), and banner skull):

Ok, a small update - painted marines!

Got a couple of test marines to try out some colours - neither of these will be the finished scheme, but now I know how much thinner vs paint to mix to create the washes I will be using, the next set of marines should come out looking smoothly graduated greys like the guy on the left (rather than the very spackled marine on the right), but with another darker grey in the shadowed areas (ie underneath the marine as if light was shining down from above), and have a slightly better shading on the yellow side too

C&C welcome (I know it is not the best picture, but hey ).

The final scheme will be closer to the original space marine painter scheme, with appropriately mirrored knee and shoulder trim colours, and a bone chest and joint colour.

All work and no painting makes blogs boring, so here is some more painting!

These marines need another coat of yellow, then a wash over the top plus details. The eagle eyed readers will also be able to spot the librarian on the far right - he will be in standard marine colours but with blue arms, shoulders and helmet:

These marines are a little bit behind in the painting stakes, and still need a wash on the grey side, and of course the yellow halves painting up x2 layers, plus details. And also a bonus shot of the librarian from a different (though out of focus (sorry!)) angle:

I've gone a bit assembly crazy over the last couple of days and have now put together a whole bunch more marines... though as you can see I still have a way to go

So, here is a run down of some of the new marines that have been born over the last few days - almost all of them require greenstuffing (my least favorite part of the process), and shoulder pads (I've run out :( ) but the giant pile of bits was calling to me:

The Honour Guard:

2 squad leaders (with combat shields) and a couple of regular marines:

Another squad leader with LC and combat shield:

More marines:

And finally, a start on some death company:

And an appeal - if anyone has any SM torsos/backs, bolt pistol arms, chainsword arms or shoulder pads - please drop me a line - I've got tonnes of bits and models for a number of armies that I would be happy to trade. Just let me know what you want.
