Re:Is the Chinese economy going to tank sometime soon?

The Chinese economy hasn't been anything you could sensibly call communist for about two decades. Instead it's more like the Gilded Age, with vast wealth at the top of the system all tied in to the political system, in a vast network of corruption and inefficiency. This is all sustained by the vast majority of people working very hard for a very small portion of the overall wealth.

And the reason a Chinese economic slowdown probably won't be like a slowdown in a developed country is because right now people buy in to that very unfair deal on the promise that it will be much better for their children, or their children's children. If you upset that promise of ever expanding wealth (that will one day flow down to me) then, well, who knows what might happen? In the GFC the hit to the Chinese economy was pretty minor compared to elsewhere in the world, but they vast riots in which people got killed - it shat all over the Occupy movement.

So if China was to ever suffer a serious slowdown, or even retraction, there's every chance the result could be catastrophic. They call it a bicycle economy, because its only really stable when its moving fast. And, well, when economic projects are determined through that web of political connections and corruption, then you've got a system that's good enough to play catch up with the West, aping their industry and competing through very low wages... but with wages now moving to the point where the rest of Asia and even parts of the developed world are competing again (there are sewing factories moving back to the US) then future Chinese growth needs to come through developing more sophisticated business. And that needs a much healthier economic model.

Oh, and lastly, the economic impact of the one child policy has been way overstated. It was never implemented in the country, where vast reserves of labour still exist. As a social policy it was awful, of course, but on the economy front the demographic impact will just absorbed by pulling surplus labour in to the city from the country.

I'm not expert on China, but they already are having big slowdowns, and real estate problems. I think Sebs look at the Gilded Age is pretty apt, and what followed the Gilded Age was pretty impressive labor unrest, big social changes, and in Europe World War.

If you think about the make-up of Chinese Society, without the outlet of a ballot box; the society will exentually explode from social pressure from; ethnic groups, sexual groups, and the have-nots.

Right now, a lot of this tension is masked by rampant Nationalism and a growing economy.
