Painting cramp

Do you use those fingers to brace against the hand holding the model? I frequently do, when working on awkward areas that don't allow me to use my palm heel. My brain says "tighter grip, more control," which usually results in cramping, both for my brush-holding and my supporting fingers. Try to stay conscious of the pressure you're exerting and force yourself keep a light touch with your brush and to adjust your grip on the model, instead of stretching your painting hand. Short, frequent breaks never hurt - if you've already cramped, take an extra few minutes to give it a stretch and relax.

I get this when I do horn engraving work (I do crafts as well), but not when painting, because painting for me has never been a tense exercise.

If it's sore then it's best to stop for a break as soon as the pain occurs, otherwise you could worsen things . Also, it might be worth seeing a specialist just to make sure you're on the right track.
