Removing shiney effect from too much ink.

Hi, it's happened a few time, where a bit too much ink pools on one spot and you don't realise till its too late.

Painting over it will obscure detail, so thats not a great option, and its not quite so bad that I would want to strip the whole model, so what can i do just to reduce the glossy effect of the ink?

Thanks!

Actually, a number of furniture stains and polishes have been appropriated for modeling use (Future floor polish as a varnish and/or wash base and Minwax Polyshade dips spring to mind).

For your purposes, though, I'd get matte acrylic varnish - either buy an aerosol can to spray or a small bottle to brush on. Many, if not most, paint manufacturers also put out varnishes, so you can likely find them wherever paints are sold - art/craft stores for brush-ons from Liquitex, Golden, and the craft paint brands, or home improvement stores (or sections of larger stores, like Walmart) for spray cans from Krylon, Rustoleum, etc.

My personal favorite - Testors Dullcote - is actually a lacquer, but acrylics are generally the weapon of choice for varnishing models. A thin coat or two of any decent matte varnish will knock that shine right down with minimal effort.

I'm pretty sure Lhamian is a gloss Varnish, your best bet is an art supply store.
Vallejo makes great varnish. I especially love the satin varnish for cutting the shine from inks. The satin varnish is not completely matte, so it leaves a little reflectivity.

It also works wonders for covering decals.

Removing shiney effect from too much ink.

Do a search on varnish, or specifically mat varnish - you will get dozens and dozens of hits.
(this comes up about every six weeks).

For spray on, the leader seems to be testors dullcoat in a can.

For brush on, just about any "art store" varnish is decent, although I like liquitex.

My favorite however is testors clear acryl, matte. I airbrush it on, but it can be sprayed on.

If you want more info than already in this thread - I would sincerely suggest a search...

best of luck!
