Hi, it's happened a few time, where a bit too much ink pools on one spot and you don't realise till its too late.
Painting over it will obscure detail, so thats not a great option, and its not quite so bad that I would want to strip the whole model, so what can i do just to reduce the glossy effect of the ink?
Thanks!

Apply matte varnish thinly until Sheen is gone. Next question.

Very funny...
I was just asking in case there is a specific kind i needed, I assumed the same thing used on furniture may not be suitable for little plastic miniatures.

Actually, a number of furniture stains and polishes have been appropriated for modeling use (Future floor polish as a varnish and/or wash base and Minwax Polyshade dips spring to mind).
For your purposes, though, I'd get matte acrylic varnish - either buy an aerosol can to spray or a small bottle to brush on. Many, if not most, paint manufacturers also put out varnishes, so you can likely find them wherever paints are sold - art/craft stores for brush-ons from Liquitex, Golden, and the craft paint brands, or home improvement stores (or sections of larger stores, like Walmart) for spray cans from Krylon, Rustoleum, etc.
My personal favorite - Testors Dullcote - is actually a lacquer, but acrylics are generally the weapon of choice for varnishing models. A thin coat or two of any decent matte varnish will knock that shine right down with minimal effort.

The official GW solution is Lhamian Medium, a brush on matte layer.

I'm pretty sure Lhamian is a gloss Varnish, your best bet is an art supply store. Get a 250ml bottle for only 2-3x what the 12ml bottle of GW stuff will cost and it won't dry out on you like those GW pots do.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

Thanks guys! I'm a little sheltered and mainly use GW products for painting and such (Warhammer World as your local is a blessing and a curse!) I'll nip down to my other local model shop and see what they've got going.

You are mixing it up with 'ardcoat, the gloss varnish.
Lahmian Medium serves three purposes:
1.) As matte varnish
2.) As protection for decals, hiding the glossy rim
3.) As expensive thinner for Citadel paints.

Vallejo makes great varnish. I especially love the satin varnish for cutting the shine from inks. The satin varnish is not completely matte, so it leaves a little reflectivity.
It also works wonders for covering decals.

Do a search on varnish, or specifically mat varnish - you will get dozens and dozens of hits.
(this comes up about every six weeks).
For spray on, the leader seems to be testors dullcoat in a can.
For brush on, just about any "art store" varnish is decent, although I like liquitex.
My favorite however is testors clear acryl, matte. I airbrush it on, but it can be sprayed on.
If you want more info than already in this thread - I would sincerely suggest a search...
best of luck!
