Tyranid Harpy/Crone Magnetizing and Transport

I don't have a Crone or Harpy yet, nor have I seen one modeled, but they seem to have a very large foot print. On battle foam's custom builder, they require almost a full layer of foam by themselves.

I am magnetizing my Flyrant wings to simplify transport, and will magnetize the Crone / Harpy so that I can switch between them.

To anyone that has already modeled a Harpy or Crone, are the wings designed in such a way that they could be Magnetized? How do you plan to transport them? Do they fit in a 2" thick foam layer if you remove the flyer base?

I'm picking out a new case to Transport my Tyranids which I hope will eventually include 2 Crone / Harpies. Is there any advice you'd offer for selecting an appropriate tansport for the flyers?

Here's a little kit review that I did when they were first released.
All magnetisation would be possible.
Overall depth of the core kit is 2.5" approx.
Depth of the assembled crone model including Spines and Breasticles is closer to 3.5". Harpy would be bigger due to the spine.
Width is approx. 2" without wings, 11" with wings.
Overall length is just over 9"
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/572964.page

That is very useful information. So, if I reserve a 3" layer of 15.5" by 12" uncut foam, I might be able to get as many as 3 Harpy's / Crones into it if I magnetize the wings, and store them on end, Like so:

Rather than only one fully assembled one:

Does that seem about right?

I used a very strong (n52 grade) 1/8" magnet for the second join. The two of them together work very well.

Similar to others, I did not care for the flight stand mount, so I drilled it out and use instead a 1/2" acrylic rod.
(all my flyers for all my armies use 1/2" acrylic rod stands).

To convert between harpy and crone I magnetized the following;
* arms - they magnetize well in the small socket using a 1/8" N52 grade magnet.
* spore mine orifice - I used a small 1/8" n52 grade magnet in the flat spot at the bottom "lip" on the model, and put a similar magnet in matching locations on the spore mine assembly, and on the big spike thing for the crone.
* heads - this was the usual magnet in the socket area and matching magnet in the back of the head assembly.
* tentaclid missiles - I used very thin 1/16" thick magnets in the wings (they are thick enough) and similar small magnets in the missile mount points, they work great.

I chose to not bother to magnetize the spikes and tail, and just went with which ones I thought looked best for the model.

I also can second Alex's comments about;
* its a good kit, and fun to put together
* I don't like how the top spore funnel/chimney things go in - I had a hard time covering them with filler and putty.

Regarding foam and storage, the wings are very...oddly shaped - I would wait until you had them in hand to get exact measurements or order foam.
Once I come up with a custom design for one that the wing come off, I will post up a pic.

Tyranid Harpy/Crone Magnetizing and Transport

I will definitely wait until I have models in hand to cut or customize foam. But I already have about 1,000 points of my army modeled and 1/2 of that painted, and I need some way to store and transport it.

So I was hoping to buy a case right now, I want to figure out the number and thickness of layers of 15.5" by 12" foam that I will eventually need in my case for transporting the Harpies / Crones. It will dictate the size of case I need, as well as the arrangement of the other layers of foam.

Perhaps I should just buy foam for what I have, and transport it in a Rubbermaid until I finish collecting and modeling my standard 'nids.

Totally understand.

My existing nid army is all in bunch of battelfoam trays (getting the gargoyles into a single tray was fun....) and I have a big bag already.

Once I get my new bugs done and any others I need to make (want another mawloc) I will order a few more trays.
until then,I just transport the crone in a cardboard box that has some bubble wrap in it.

best of luck!
