Hi.
Okay so I thought I'd write a short review/kit build of the new Harpy/Crone for you guys.
Hopefully it'll help a few of you when it comes to putting your own together and highlight some of the flaws, limitations and possibilities of the kit and
give you a bit more of an insight than just looking at the sprue pics.

So, in true Blue Peter here is what you will need.....

This pic shows the bits for both that you need to make the core of the kit. This is what you will have to build for both the Harpy and Crone builds.

Finished core top

Finished core bottom. This shows the cross shape to holds the flying stand. This is probably my least favourite part of the kit.
Something about the angular nature of the stand looks off with the organic tyranid. Also the stand doesn't fit very positively into the
model. I could easily see the model being knocked off the stand during gaming if not glued or blue tacked in. I'll be replacing mine with
some black acrylic rod.

At this stage magnetisation becomes an option unless of course you want to magnetise the wings for storage? This would be easily done
as there is a lot of meat there to bury a magnet or pin into and there are two good contact points on each wing.
Next up the Crone specific bits

And the Harpy Bits

I decided to build the Crone variant at this stage. I'll point out some oddities....
The vestigial Scytals have got a tiny contact point. These will probably snap so best to try and re-enforce with a pin.

This pic shows one of a pair of plugs designed to cover the mount for the spikes on the Harpy build. I'm not keen on how GW have designed this.
It's a very tight fit (as shown in pic with no glue) so you'll be best to shave them down a bit so as to be able to get any filler, green stuff or plastic putty
into the crack to make a decent job of it.

The Tentaclid mounts seem a little fussy and I'm not quite sure why they were not cast as one piece?

The bonus is that by leaving the mount off you'll find a magnet sized hole in each one.

And here's a quick snap of a finished Crone build.

Anyway, I hope someone out there finds this useful and if anyone would like any additional pics, information, measurements etc then let me know.
Cheers.

Thank you sir. It's nice to see someone take the time to show us what all to expect. I am however critical of the beer in your picture... Why only one?

Thanks! I'm on the fence with this kit, but you've helped me decide.

Could you take a photo next to a Trygon? If it's not too much trouble.

Cheers, I'm glad that it's been appreciated.
There were more in the fridge.

Cheers.
So, what's your decision?
Pics incoming! Let me know if you want any more it's no trouble.

Nice review, thanks for the big photos If you get another one perhaps you could do a video of the assembly?

Hmmm...

Thanks for sharing. I have yet to start building this guy.

Not sure yet if will leave wings on or off for storage and transport as you suggest. Have to think about it.

I am also going to try and figure out if I can magnetize enough elements to do either a harpy or a crone (not sure if I would ever use a harpy, but that is another story....).

thanks for sharing.

Great review. It helps me to decide I probably ought to get one.

I thought the kit was really easy to put together, I noticed it and the Haruspex kit were really well done.

That said, I think the Crone/Harpy is too short/squat so I added to the tail and extended the head out to look more wasp like instead of fat/bumblebee.

I think I need to buy one, or three. Probably 3. that's a bloody big model!

What is the worst place to transport tentaclids? Correct, the skin of the wings. Not your fault, but seeing the skin of the wings ripped to shreds hurts everytime I see it. In addition, it makes flight impossible. This is no friggin airplane with immobile wings that can carry a heavy bomb load. As stupid as the official Tyrannofex model, that can't even stand (or walk) without falling over.

If I would buy and build a Crone model (I probably won't), I would place the tentaclids on the body, similar to the Gargoyles on the Harridan (from times when GW sculptors had a basic understanding of physics and biology).

Thanks, I do have another but I'm not sure that a video would show much more. I'll possibly update this with some more pics of the other kit as it goes together though.

I'm not sure quite what you'd save magnetising the wings as the model has a pretty low profile. I suppose it depends on your cases.
It's easily possible to magnetise the whole kit.

Iechine wrote:I thought the kit was really easy to put together, I noticed it and the Haruspex kit were really well done

This kit was, I felt that the Haruspex build was a little trickier. Lots of two part limbs and the mouth assembly is a bit clunky.
This thread seems to have gone down quite well so I may do another review on that kit later as I've go two more to put together.
Yours looks great by the way.

I should be working on commission from GW Cheers guys.

Kroothawk wrote:What is the worst place to transport tentaclids?

Yeah, I know that you're saying there. I just felt a bit as if they would attach themselves back at the low orbiting shipbeasts.
The Crone would glide/fall towards it's target with these things swarming around it just as Remora do to large ocean fish without really being firmly attached.
Seconds after deploying it's payload it smashes into the ground and into tiny pieces ready to be reabsorbed along with the rest of the planet's biomass.

Okay, when I update or do the Exocrine review I'll put my other pair in shot.
Gotta give the public what they want.

Cheers everyone, I really thought that this thread was a bit of a damp squib when I first posted it back on the 12th.
Glad people are making use of it now.
