Gods of 40k

What are all the gods of 40k and are they really gods or just higher life forms. I know that the eldar had/have gods and based on the lore one is in Nurgle's garden but what's real and what is myth? Slanesh is real and same with the other chaos deities but what about Malice? Heck, what about the emperor is he a god building back the warp from Terra?

Wow thanks. I guess my confusion stems from the lack of information regarding the devine 40k beings. Did the emperor ascend to godhood? What happened to the Eldar gods? Do certain gods have more power than other gods? So much information is vague at best and contradicting at worst.

The Chaos Gods refer to him as "the Anathema" because he stands as a beacon of order and unity for humanity and is therefore their antithesis on an ideological level. The status of divinity in the Warhammer 40k universe is really up to how you define the requirements something need to be divine. The Chaos Gods and the Emperor have performed some feats that are pretty wholly beyond the scope of mortality (creating life, immeasurable expressions of power, seemingly impossible levels of knowledge). If that's enough to call them gods, then they are definitely gods. On the other hands, such things as the Emperor's "miracles" or "saints" can be chalked up to expressions of his incredible psychic power and therefore not really miracles at all. Unless of, of course, psychic power is considered to be a divine power.

It's really up to the reader's interpretation. Just don't let the Inquisition hear you questioning the Emperor's divinity.

He then proceeded to create a secular unified empire because religion divided the species. He appears to believe that the chaos gods are 'higher beings' that cannot be defeated or conquered through conventional manners.

Theory 2.

The Emperor knows that 'gods' exist and makes a deal to create his 'sons'. He backs out of the deal and attempts to starve Chaos by limiting worship and when that backfires he transcends to stave of chaos from winning and becomes a divine being as well through the worship of trillions.

Thoughts?

Gork and Mork are also Chaos gods btw.
A god does not have to be a being of immense power, a god can be a lot of things depending on how you define the word 'god'.

So powerful.

No, there are numerous unaligned entities within the warp, infinite actually, all chaotic in origin that are spawned by the Immaterium. Malice is one of these, nothing actually points to him being a Chaos God, merely one of the innumerable minor entities within the Immaterium, which are not gods.

You are once again referring to the Chaos furies. Again they are a bad example as they form in a very different manner than other Warp entities. They are the souls of mortals who tried to use Chaos for their own gain. A god in the meanwhile, is a manifestation of mortal emotions and souls in the Warp. Malice is a chaos god in the same way the Emperor, Cegorach and Khorne are gods. Different of course because being shaped by different emotions, but still similar. Malice is outright referred to as a god (the Renegade God) in the Labyrinth. There are myriads of gods like malice, as should be expected. The existence of minor Chaos gods have been part of Chaos fluff since at least the 3rd edition.
And again, god ≠ powerful.

Sasori wrote:

Iron_Captain wrote:

Da krimson barun wrote:

Iron_Captain wrote:
Gork and Mork are also Chaos gods btw.

.... GORK AND MORK ISNT SPIKEY BOYZ BOSSES!YOU IZ A STOOPID HUMIE WHO 'FINKS DEAD BOYZ ARE BOSSEZ!

Like all gods, Gork and Mork live in the Warp. The Warp is a dimension of energy known as Chaos. So even though 'Chaos' in common parlance refers to the followers of the four Dark Gods, all gods, even the Emperor Himself, are technically Chaos gods. Or are you implying Gork and Mork aren't gods? I don't think your fellow Orks would like that...

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect.

Chaos is just parts of the warp manifested by emotions. More generally, "Chaos" refers to anything related to Chaos, including its influence, the Gods of Chaos, their followers, and the Warp.
It helps that there's a clear difference in behavior between the Chaos Gods and the Warp Gods, not to mention how they interact with their believers.

The Chaos Gods feed upon their respective emotions, while the Warp Gods appear, as far as I can tell, to be entirely self-sufficient. While the Avatar of Khaine requires a willing sacrifice to manifest in the material realm, the Eldar don't appear to need to do anything else for him that could be considered 'feeding' him in some way.

There's also the fact that the Warp existed long before Chaos did, or at the very least Chaos as an active threat. It could be that the Chaos part of the Warp is so prevalent to the point that there's no real difference between the two anymore is because the Galaxy is just that messed up a place.

As to which category Him On Earth falls into, I can't really say at this point. On the one hand, a thousand souls are sacrificed to him every day, but that could be less him being a Chaos God and more him being on the world's worst life support rig, and the 'Holy Powers' certain Sororitas Sisters manifest in battle don't behave like the usual Chaos-derived powers, so an argument could be made that he's actually a Warp God of some sort, or at the very least a Proto-Warp God who may-or-may-not successfully achieve apotheosis once the Golden Throne finally breaks down for good.

It's too bad GW does everything Warp-related as Chaos-related, there's some potential there. Warp Powers as an alternative to Chaos Powers, with good Librarians sticking to the former while Sorcerers decide that the latter is better. It could still be dangerous, but in a natural way, like how a fire is dangerous but not evil, while Chaos is explicitly malign in it's actions.

It's important to note that there are two ways to use the term Chaos.

Chaos: The psychic energy that the entirety of the Warp is made of. The word is used because of the ever-changing and unstable nature of the Warp.

Chaos: The daemonic legions and corrupting entities of the Warp that are affiliated with the Chaos Gods.

Most, not all, entities that exist in the Warp are composed of Chaotic energies, but they are not necessarily affiliated with the daemonic forces of Chaos.
