The black shields are marines swotn to eternaly serve the Death Watch until they die, the reason for a Marine to become a Black shield is many but it can vary from said Marine being highly skilled at batteling xenos to attonement for some unknown deed or failiur.

Black Shields are space marines that for some reason, wish to enlist in the black shields with a "clean slate" by disowning their parent chapter they becoming wholly deathwatch.
