How far is too far to move down vertically?

In a friendly game I had last week my opponent thought that I would have to take a dangerous terrain test because my Eldar Jetbikes descended from an overpass (open ground) to open ground below. His concern was that it was 7 inches down, which is more than 6 inches so they would be technically falling, even though they can move 12 inches (jetbike). Is there a "falling" test if you move down too far?

To my Knowledge, there is no such thing as a 'falling test.' Some 6th Edition players might have the misconception that there is such a test, because there where Rules for 'jumping down' from Ruins. However, that was an optional Rule that needed to be evoked before the test was required and could easily be bypassed. Should the Model already have the capability of moving safely down from the Ruin, such as having enough movement to make it to the next floor down, then there would be no reason to opt to 'jump.' Needless to say, as these Rules where firmly found in the 'Ruin' section of the 6th Edition Rule book, they are no longer present in the 7th Editions brutalised version of these Rules...

Re:How far is too far to move down vertically?

Below is what i think trips up a lot of people from 6th to 7th, since these things no longer exist.

Gravity - Nature's Downward Express
If your unit is in the upper floors of a ruin and wants to get down
in a hurry, the models can always jump down. This, as it sounds,
is really quite dangerous and bound to end with a sickening
snapping noise, but desperation can often make such things
necessary. A unit that is not falling back and descending through
a building can always elect to Leap Down to a lower level, rather
than making a Difficult Terrain test. llowever, all descending
models in the unit must take an Impact test (see page 95).

Leaping Down
A unit can always elect to leap down frorn the battlements,
although this incurs significant risk.
To resolve this, choose one model from the battlements
and place it anywhere wholly within 3" of the base of
the building that is at least I " away from enemy models,
and not in impassable or lethal terrain. That model must
then take an Impact test. This is exactly like a Dangerous
Terrain test, with a -l modifi.er for every full3" the model
has dropped. Unlike ordinary Dangerous Terrain tests,
armour saves cannot be taken against Impact tests.Jump
and Jet Pack models must still take Impact tests but they ignore
any modifiers from falling 3 or more inches.
If the model is slain, choose another and try again. If the model
sunrives, resolve the same sequence for all the other models in
the unit, taking care to remain in unit coherency. Any models
that cannot be placed, for whatever reason, are removed as
casualties with no saves of anv kind allowed.

As long as your unit can move the distance it is allowed to do so.

Jetbikes can move 12" and so a 7" climb or decent does not hinder them in the least.

If however you had a unit on top a battlement that was 9" up, and they fell back 8" or less, they would be removed as casualties since they cannot float in the air nor do they have permission to move more than the distance rolled.

Do you remember where it says to remove as casualties when they fall further than they can move? That reference would be great to have, we've got several terrain pieces now that are higher than 6", so I'm thinking we'll probably need it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

deviantduck wrote:
Below is what i think trips up a lot of people from 6th to 7th, since these things no longer exist. ....

Thank you, I believe you are correct.
