Knight Warden

The new Knight list in Conquest brings a proper Imperial Knight list to the table. It's wonderful, but there are still some Knight models missing. The Barron, Crusader, but today we're going to discuss the warden. I am aware it only exists in a single, old/out of date source, but I would like to include one on a knight-world campaign down the road.

That being said I would like to discuss some proposed rules to ensure they are faithful to the original epic model/rules but costed/balanced enough to be fair in friendly games. I have found an old stat sheet for one, and having never in my live played epi/titanicus can't make heads or tails of it. Perhaps some of the more seasoned dakkites can shed some light on it.

From what I can gather the warden was:
-Was heavy armed and armoured. (av14 on the front?)
-And as a result was slower than paladins/errants, and basically every other knight. Close to half the speed if I read the stat sheet right.
-Was traditionally painted mostly white.
-Came in both bi-pedal and tracked flavours
-The weapons seem to vary. It looks like they had a big battle cannon or missle launcher as their primary weapon then had multilasers or gattling cannons as secondary weapons where the arms would be.

Here is my initial draft:
Questoris Knight Warden 445 points
14/12/12 WS 5 BS 5 S 10 I 2 A 2 HP6

Unit type:
-Vehicle-Super Heavy Walker

Wargear:
-Ion Shield
-Hull mounted Questoris (big cannon)
-Two autocannons batteries

Options:
-Occular Augmentics--per Conquest's price
-The Questoris Knight Warden may exchange its legs for tracks gaining the Tracked Behemouth Special rule (See Apocalypse rulebook) +20 points
-The Questoris Knight Warden may exchange its Questoris (big cannon) for a hull mounted Praetor Launcer +35 Points
-The Questoris Knight Warden may purchase a Helical Targeting array granting Skyfire and Interceptor to its Autocannon batteries but must forfeit its movement to do so. +20

Special Rules:
-Household Rank (May not take Scion Assistant)
-Super Heavy Walker
-Armoured Hulk
-Extra Armour

Extra rules:
-Questoris (big canon) 48" S9 ap2 7" blast heavy 1
-Autocanon Battery: Per quadgun in rulebook minus Skyfire and interceptor.
-Armoured Hulk: Due to the extra armour plating on the Questoris Warden it may never run and its charge distances are reduced by half.

Knight Warden

The knight warden was a classic "fire support" knight. In titan legions, it was fleshed out a bit: warden was a rank and the two chassis they used were called castellans and crusaders.

My comments:
- I would rather up the side armour to 13 and add hull points than give it front armour 14. You need to be very careful with increasing armour values in a knight list or risk rendering big chunks of enemy antitank weapons unable to hurt you.

- Armoured hulk isn't really a downside - a ranged weapon only knight chassis does its damage in the shooting phase and will neither run or charge if it can avoid it. Meanwhile, it 's still got a 12" move (which it shouldn't have) for avoiding people trying to assault it.

The castelan and crusader both used a quake cannon (the thing on the doomhammer) as their primary weapon, one backing it up with a shedload of autocannons, the other with lascannons.

the quake cannon replaces the reaper chainsword as the 'titan grade' weapon, whilst the battlecannon is equivalent to two keman russ turrets - so I'd call it a pair of exterminator autocannons (which, coincidentally, has the statline you're describing) or a quad lascannon or rapier.

The missile launcher version of the warden taking a praetor launcher, faur enough, but thats a third chassus, which had rsther lighter arm guns - a pair of punisher cannons might work. I wouldnt bother with a helical array - you can get skyfire from one of the knightly ranks, and I wouldn't dilute that, Besides which, a praetor launcher has he option of a pretty badass skyfire round...

Good to know. Explains why the warden knights saw a fairly short production run. Honestly, just because I'm a completionist I'd love to eventually do both these as well as the castellans, crusaders, and Barons. Possibly even the original (non-Cerastus) lancer variant.
