I understand that people have an adversity to video games, and the supposed fake statistical Data that says "Video Games Cause ______"

I understand why people have that. they had a similar thing about books. But the funny thing is that While I studied psychology, I got into contact with someone about video games. I found out that our brains have self defense mechanism that prevents us from learning those bad mannerisms or being manipulated to do things. Like if you play a game you will not become violent because you play games. You are able to be desensitized to it, that is possible. This episode in particular is focusing on GAMERS and Game DEVS, which it has very little understanding of. Or of the Whole Gamer Gate issue. But WE WILL STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT. I won't poke that beast for another three months.

I am sorry but anyone that believes video games cause violence should also be saying that books and movies cause you to become a Serial Killer.

I just needed to vent this off because it is literally giving me a headache. I understand that many of you will disagree with me here. As it is a controversial subject.

But I seriously feel like this show is just fear mongering at this point.

And yes I had a migriane and went down stairs to my training room for a good hour to punch a bag over and over.

As a Game Designer when ever I see stuff like this, I just feel like it is a step back, like we have already been here before. You are overreacting to bad TV. Video games have been shown badly (as has hacking and programming in general) on procedural like that for about as long as there has been any of them. Many of the writers don't know anything about the subject or they don't care it. NCIS, CSI, and L&O are some of the worst offenders and I doubt that will change anytime soon.

You will probably love the upcoming CSI: Cyber. I don't know anything about it but the title is just amazing.

Criminal Intent SUCKS).

One was in the original Law and Order where some kid tried to say he only murdered people because video games made him do it (inspired by the guy a few years back who claimed GTA made him do it).

Another was an SVU episode where a rapist (serial rapist maybe can't remember) claimed he only raped someone because video games said it was okay and his lawyer argued in court he was conditioned to hate women by a game suspiciously similar to GTA (and Feminist Frequency hadn't even come out yet when that episode aired ).

I believe there is also a Criminal Intent episode, where a game designer was killed by a fan of his ultra violent game. But like I said, Criminal Intent sucked the most and I don't exactly remember why the fan killed the guy XD

Dick Wolf tends tends to write episodes about contemporary issues. I propose we now only make episodes of police TV show where there is no bad guy and everyone is an outstanding person that is spreading joy and happiness around him. Because else, we would be sending the wrong message about how people are terrible and we should hate them.


No you can make people out to be bad guys. You can do that to basically anyone as long as you make it clear that you are not making a generalization.

Lets say I changed Gamer to Muslim.

"Muslims are EVIL! THE KORRAH CAUSES VIOLENCE!"

Well it sort of does and sorta doesn't. I mean people can learn things. But that is mostly from life experience. People can be mislead, to have the wrong information. Such as statistical data.

But there are people who do take it seriously. As there are people who have mental problems who think it to be real or something along those lines.

I mean lets take the game Americas Army. America's army is a training game, it is a recruitment drive made by the United States Army. Then we have game called Zog's Nightmare which is about killing jews, and is a recruitment program for a terrorist organization.

Now.. Both of these have messages, and have been proven to work. This is propaganda which does in some way influence us. The honest truth is that you can't control a hashtag and especially one where there is no qualifier to be in said movement. Twitter is the worst place strike a debate as literally anyone can attack you. I mean there was the not all men or the not all women hashtags that spiralled out of control. Gamergate is like the polar opposite of the Gamer+ movement that has been starting to spread among so-called feminists. Who really don't hold many of the values of feminism but want to make gaming a better place. But they do it in such a manner that is quite ridiculous by censoring and banning games they deem to be offensive.

There are harassers in each group of people. It is liking saying people who like pie don't have people who hate certain types of pie. That everyone in that group of people that like pie that no one can say differently. It is very much what is currently going on. WE have people identifying as something and becoming a group and furthering gap between two groups of people. Dragon Age Origins has hints and heavily implied points (particularly if city elf)

I was agreeing - it's not common in video games, but it's not too common in literature either, with the exception of bodice-ripping romance novels.

I can't imagine anyone is going to be happy about the show. Gamers will end up looking like weirdos and/or sociopathic serial killers and the plot twist will probably be that the developer sent the threats herself for publicity.

Honestly I don't know how to describe it. Tried to go for funnies but couldn't even hit it. Simply put, GamerGate was a group of people on the internet that had different goals. Some just wanted to harass Anita and Zoe and some wanted video game journalism to not be bad (because it's been a general opinion for a long time). Of the improvement of journalism you had some that just wanted for the reviewers to at least mention their connections that might bias them whilst others wanted that and the downfall of the rating system while others wanted to burn the entire thing to the ground. Even with all that, toss in a sprinkling of the internet. The general vile and caustic attitude that in every part of the internet in some way shape or form, add in people that want to make everything worse and it became a recipe of chaos. Twitter in many ways just made it worse. The catch is that some GamerGaters are bad, most are not. Some Anti-GG are bad, most aren't. It becomes an argument like any other. Certain arguments have merit, some are just inherent lies. There are a few that not only harass, sending the standard death threats but even send messages with boxes full of fake syringes and the sorts, people that get doxed, people fired because of somebody harassing the place they work for until it makes the worker get fired. And what difference does it make? A few sights improved their requirements on what has to be done for a game review but the price was bitterness and just another group versus group mentality. And what does the main media do? Sweep in, broadcast one sided arguments that are inflammatory in attitude and get fame while still getting to use games for a scapegoat for everything. This sudden rush of controversy then sends things like Law and Order to make another video about games being violence and blah blah blah. On Feb. 11, Law and Order SVU aired an episode about video games called “Intimidation Game” that is being called the “Reefer Madness” of our times. It was a relentless and histrionic parade of slander against video games and gamers. It has helped set back the public image of the video games by years if not decades. It made absolutely nobody happy in the gaming industry.


This result, this episode, shown to millions of non-gamers worldwide is the inevitable result of months of gaming press coverage on the rift between gamers that currently plagues our hobby. A rift that the gaming press are accountable for conflagrating through a slew of articles that only served to fan the flames, celebrate the extremists on both sides, magnify the rift and sensationalize the issue. There is a term for this, called yellow journalism, and it has started wars before. It has no place in a gaming press that is supposed to support our industry and gamers in particular, of all walks.


Now we're asking you, as the vanguard of the face of gamers to the mass media and the wider non-gaming masses, to help heal this rift and fix the damage you have caused.


You are our first line of defense when our industry and our hobby is attacked by a mass media and our own law-makers bent on either trivializing or demonizing our past-time, or worse, legislating it out of existence. You were there for us when Jack Thompson attempted to shut us down. You were there for us when we won 1st Amendment protection for video games in front of the Supreme Court of the United States. We want you to be there for us now.


At stake is no less than decades of work that we have all put in to win the right of games to stand alongside other media as art, as free speech, as valuable learning tools for our children, and more.


Help us. Help us restore the damage that has been done. Help us stop this wasteful, self-defeating, sensationalist coverage that does nothing to solve our differences, but only serves to drive us apart. Find the common ground, drive productive dialogue, and find solutions instead of simply pointing fingers.

I understand that people have an adversity to video games, and the supposed fake statistical Data that says "Video Games Cause ______"

I understand why people have that. they had a similar thing about books. But the funny thing is that While I studied psychology, I got into contact with someone about video games. I found out that our brains have self defense mechanism that prevents us from learning those bad mannerisms or being manipulated to do things. Like if you play a game you will not become violent because you play games. You are able to be desensitized to it, that is possible. This episode in particular is focusing on GAMERS and Game DEVS, which it has very little understanding of. Or of the Whole Gamer Gate issue. But WE WILL STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT. I won't poke that beast for another three months.

I am sorry but anyone that believes video games cause violence should also be saying that books and movies cause you to become a Serial Killer.

I just needed to vent this off because it is literally giving me a headache. I understand that many of you will disagree with me here. As it is a controversial subject.

But I seriously feel like this show is just fear mongering at this point.

Polygon, Kotaku and several others disagree, they think it is completely untrue, they do make fun of it, but it does make them get worried, because something similar spurred a revolt against the game industry.

The game industry lives in quite a bit of fear of what the public will do to them. As not only did they portrayal of game designers as completely weak but they showed our customers as being easily manipulated and that we have our own terrorist cells. Even though we haven't had that happened. That just puts the industry in a bad light. Its completely insulting.

You may think it to be light hearted but its tone says other wise.

Infact I think it is rather insulting for the victims of gamergate to have that happen (All of them both sides have their share of victims). They were not representing Antia, at all. Antia is not a game developer, nor would should be a good, a Game Developer and Designer needs to be able to take criticism of their work. Brianna Wu is probably who they were talking about as the episode was written in october and brianna wu is a game developer (Albeit not the greatest one, to put in prespective, I can do what she does relatively easily, but I don't get paid by patron by 15,000 per month)

Infact I know they were talking about her, because she is the only game dev that fits the profile they used. Brianna Wu has recieved death threats as well as ZQ, but both of them got into a type of sick competition of who is the bigger victim (No I am not joking)

Though in all honesty, this only worries the industry and me, but we aren't scared of it, we just like the idea of our industry being represented so poorly.

I mean everytime a game designer or developer is on TV they are shown to only be a toy maker. Nothing more, which is incredibly insulting to many of the designers. You might not find it insulting, but to people who find gaming as an art and as a life practice it is insulting, incredibly insulting to do that. Only a select few actually care about Antia, most just see it as criticisms, but don't find it to be absolutely correct, they are still alot of flaws from her statements on alot of matters.

Believe it or not, I welcome criticism of all my work. I have a portifilio I open it up for suggestions, criticism, I often let people rip apart my work. I change things I look over things.

I was a map maker for warcraft 3 for six years. I know what criticism is, and I ran a few maps and games. I also was apart of the original team that tested DOTA. Yes the original, as in Warcraft 3 (Starcraft one doesn't count, it didn't get popular until WC3). Where I tested the Dragon Knight and still remains the only class I will play in DOTA.

If I wanted to I could show you a laundry list of things I have written and done. I constantly ask for criticisms of my work, and I constantly help others edit their work. Yes please tell me how I can't take criticism. You don't know me or my history, yet you assume you do know my history.

Considering I have never coded until six months ago except in Java, and Jass and the picked up C# in three weeks. Then yes I think I can. They are easy to make, but hard to replicate in such a manner that makes it so that it is worth while for the player to get.

But it really matters on what engine you are using.

Plus I was also talking about technical and Modelling skills not just coding. I won't even get started on that games writing abilities. Ugh. Yes because coding is the main focus of Game Design. Which is my field. If you haven't studied game design then how do you think your qualified?

Its like a doctor who thinks they know about being brain surgeon but are not a brain surgeon (or a surgeon), they may know somethings but it doesn't mean that they supersede the person who actually studies it and has done it.

You are a programmer hence why you only know programming you may have experience with games, but that doesn't supersede my experiences and my profession. Where I study more than just programming. I do not like logical thinking (in terms of problem solving), I do not think that you should think yourself more qualified on this than I am. I've studied it and I know more about the gaming community and industry than you do. You have shown to have no experience in this field. So why are you commentating it and insulting my consumers?

Antia is not a consumer of my product, she is a critic. She is a single critic who disagree with, she may of been harassed but that was well established well before this all started to happen and does not make her harassment more than any others. Harassment in all forms is bad and unquanitifable we can't go into who has more harassment or has not enough harassment, if someone is harassed they are harassed and are equal in that regard and will be treated with different bases of treatment. You cannot claim that Antia has recieved more harassment, because who cares?
They are harassed and that is all we need to know.

Antia is a victim in this, but I do not think she is a focus. Nor do I think many designers think well of her. Especially Female Designers, who often hate her and think very ill of her.

The difference I find is experiences, certain games will affect us in positive and sometimes (rarely) negative ways. People think about issues differently, I mean take Loneliness or Freedom Bridge, they have clear educating goals. They are teaching a main point and are letting you live in a different spirit a different person. Its letting you do things before that people thought very stupid or obscure.

Take for example certain books. Some books can bring up an idea that you never thought of, or it cements your position on a certain ideological path. The same is true of games, Take me for examples a few years ago I was a very violent child, but after a particular experience with a certain game, my intentions turned towards anti-violence and anti-war.

How so? It suggested and idea I had never thought of before. The real victims of war. This game brought it up and just had never thought of it.

Games can be educational. Hell I want to make educational games, I would love to be a game designer in blizzard or ubisoft, but I am not cut out to be a Captain of the Industry, I want to be a designer that makes games simply to tell stories and teach deeper meanings.

There always be fun games, but saying they are just 'entertainment' is completely disingenuous to those who practice it. Nothing in human culture is entirely useless.

My customers come first, Not some person that lives half way across the country who runs a company with little to no influence in the industry. They are not captains of industry. They are three people. Three.

Games aren't software development XD.

Very rarely does a dev also make software. I made quite a few games, saying. No I haven't is kind of stupid as I could link them. But I won't because that would put my name out there and I don't want people knowing who I am.

Truth be told, I'm not sure I even know the names of any Video Game developers not named Shigero Miyamoto, Cliff Bleszinski, or Peter Molyneaux.

Yeah thats why I often think it funny when people come in with high opinions about video games and can barely name ten game developers or hell even designers.

The game industry is quite foreign to some people. People who think just because they know someone in this industry are bound for failure, if you do not have the skills required to be in that job, no matter how smart or clever you are basically fired on day one. Often a client comes in and says we need this, and we do it, spend couple days creating it and boom were done. Critics and then we go to a drafting phase etc etc etc.

Brianna Wu, Zoe, and Antia are not really that releveant, Extra Credits, Jesse Schnell, and Game Theorists, Radiolab, Etc are more influential than any of those women. Why? Because they just do it. They just write they just create, they just teach. Not really, my brother who is in film and works in that field can name more than just directors, he can name special effect artists etc.

I can name quite a few. But people often forget that the game industry is rather different. Devs are not always the invisible people. To average consumer yeah, they are. But to the companies they know who they are and exactly what they can do.

Technically speaking, as in, speaking from a technology reference point, isn't Depression Quest entirely just an HTML type game, probably made using Twine or the like?

In which case, again, speaking technically, I really don't think it is an exaggeration when people are talking about how easy it is (although, I'd probably equate it to saying a paragraph in a foreign language, than a sentence).

Is it going to really be much more complicated than a few variables to track things, maybe a couple of counters to measure turns/time/days and a whole heap of nested 'If' statements?

And this is me talking as a failed software developer. Albeit, in industry as opposed to gaming.

In saying that, on the other hand, it's worth reminding everyone that something being technically complicated isn't the measure of the 'worth' of a game. A very simple game may have profound effects, but yeah, I'm not going to say anything about Depression Quest in that regard - it's nowt to do with me.

As for composers. It is pretty clear that from a coding point of view, Depression Quest require very few. But then again, some extremely nice mods were the same, for instance. Being able to do good games is not the same as being able to do good game engines.
