In the next few days an episode of Law and Order will be talking about video games and how they cause violence. I have never been so freaking angry in my bloody life. Its like jack thompson but on Television. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=IWqx3tnaep4&app=desktop)

I understand that people have an adversity to video games, and the supposed fake statistical Data that says "Video Games Cause ______"

I understand why people have that. they had a similar thing about books. But the funny thing is that While I studied psychology, I got into contact with someone about video games. I found out that our brains have self defense mechanism that prevents us from learning those bad mannerisms or being manipulated to do things. Like if you play a game you will not become violent because you play games. You are able to be desensitized to it, that is possible. This episode in particular is focusing on GAMERS and Game DEVS, which it has very little understanding of. Or of the Whole Gamer Gate issue. But WE WILL STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT. I won't poke that beast for another three months.

I am sorry but anyone that believes video games cause violence should also be saying that books and movies cause you to become a Serial Killer.

I just needed to vent this off because it is literally giving me a headache. I understand that many of you will disagree with me here. As it is a controversial subject.

But I seriously feel like this show is just fear mongering at this point.

Thoughts? Comments? Criticisms?

And yes I had a migriane and went down stairs to my training room for a good hour to punch a bag over and over.

As a Game Designer when ever I see stuff like this, I just feel like it is a step back, like we have already been here before. With Jack Thompson (hahahaha HAHAHAH)

You are overreacting to bad TV. Video games have been shown badly (as has hacking and programming in general) on procedural like that for about as long as there has been any of them. Many of the writers don't know anything about the subject or they don't care it. NCIS, CSI, and L&O are some of the worst offenders and I doubt that will change anytime soon.

You will probably love the upcoming CSI: Cyber. I don't know anything about it but the title is just amazing.

If only you had the high score in all the MMO's you would understand.

I am actually laughing at your outrage. What are you afraid of? That people will call for a ban on video games? Do not be ridiculous. Have you even seen the episode? Grow a thicker skin, you will need it.

If anyone needs me, I will be playing video games.

There already are Law and Order episodes about this (I've seen every episode of every season of every series... Criminal Intent SUCKS).

One was in the original Law and Order where some kid tried to say he only murdered people because video games made him do it (inspired by the guy a few years back who claimed GTA made him do it).

Another was an SVU episode where a rapist (serial rapist maybe can't remember) claimed he only raped someone because video games said it was okay and his lawyer argued in court he was conditioned to hate women by a game suspiciously similar to GTA (and Feminist Frequency hadn't even come out yet when that episode aired ).

I believe there is also a Criminal Intent episode, where a game designer was killed by a fan of his ultra violent game. But like I said, Criminal Intent sucked the most and I don't exactly remember why the fan killed the guy XD

Dick Wolf tends tends to write episodes about contemporary issues. I'm pretty sure there is also one inspired by the Columbine shooting, but whether a video game angle popped up in that episode I don't remember.

Well it pisses me off more on the side of. "Why the hell are you doing this?"

I know they have made other bad stuff. But that is just making an image of game devs and gamers in general. That is just sending the wrong message.

Not afraid of everyone I feel like it is just another step back it just angers me as a game designer. I've been insulted enough that my skin thick enough that someone can call make fun of me for my nose and I won't react that much to it.

If anyone needs me, I will be playing video games.

Play Talos Principle or life is Strange, great games, that I really want to get, not just the demos :/

Ash... someone is looking for an outlet to blame something other than themselves.

Basically. I often think people just want to blame anything but themselves.

No you can make people out to be bad guys. You can do that to basically anyone as long as you make it clear that you are not making a generalization.

Lets say I changed Gamer to Muslim.

"Muslims are EVIL! THE KORRAH CAUSES VIOLENCE!"

Get it? You are literally just strawmanning the whole bloody argument with that frame of logic.

It is taking a debate and just focusing on a small itty bitty tiny bit of the community and just saying this whole community is like that.

You can say that some gamers are like that or some muslims are like that. But it doesn't mean you can make a generalization or a false representation of someone.

You reap what you sow, buddy, you reap what you sow.

Are you saying you are reaping something you did not sow? This whole storm of gamers just being terrible, terrible human beings toward each others?

I think you're fooling yourself if you don't think GamerGate spawned this episode. These kind of topical episodes pop up in L&O only when an issue hits the mass media in a sudden frenzy. GamerGate is the most recent big video game related event to hit the mass media (and it hit while the episodes of this season would have been getting written).

This episode probably is literally inspired by GamerGate. I'd bet good money a fictional version of it ends up being referenced or made part of the plot if not GamerGate itself.

Oh I know it is. But I refuse to talk about it. You guys can talk about, but I won't touch it. Even if someone starts proclaiming I used to support it. (Which I did) but now I am no ones side. Because nobody is on my side.

And I will not let this discussion be based around GamerGate. (While I am in it) The Self Purported movement about corruption in games journalism.

In that there has yet to be any physical harm to anyone in this whole thing.

This is mostly fear mongering at this point.

This episode would do more harm than good.

Its more that people are just being idiots. There are extremists in every movement.

You have seen 14 minutes of footage, you do not even know if the game dev' is the bad guy or a victim, and yet you already assume that they are making a generalization. Congrats.

No we know who the victim is. Though I did say that it was painting the Gamers as evil. As in their past they have been known to make certain groups of people look stupid.

Hahaha Yeah. I forget that bit sometimes.

But this is more of the message, and more of the desantiziation and stereotyping which does hurt people.

But actual violence doesn't.

Stereotypes are taught to us. I am not saying this will effect you and make you into a raving lunatic about how games will cause the next gender war.

I hate to break it to you, but this is called trying to have your cake and eat it too. Either the 'raving lunatics' are right, and media does effect our perceptions, or they're wrong, and no media can effect our perceptions. You can't cherry pick which 'messages' this applies to, and which ones it doesn't. All media has a message. Every work has a meaning. Maybe not a grand philosophical one, but a meaning. Our brains are literally programmed to find meaning. It's how modern art freaking works;

Well it sort of does and sorta doesn't. I mean people can learn things. But that is mostly from life experience. People can be mislead, to have the wrong information. Such as statistical data.

But there are people who do take it seriously. As there are people who have mental problems who think it to be real or something along those lines.

I mean lets take the game Americas Army. America's army is a training game, it is a recruitment drive made by the United States Army. Then we have game called Zog's Nightmare which is about killing jews, and is a recruitment program for a terrorist organization.

Now.. Both of these have messages, and have been proven to work. This is propaganda which does in some way influence us. But not to a large degree.

I think just googling the title of the episode was sufficient to find that it will be exactly about Gamergate.

Video game developer Raina Punjabi (guest star Mouzam Makkar) solidifies the launch of her first game amid a stream of online insults, intimidation and death threats from the male-dominated gaming community. When a female employee is assaulted at a gamer convention, Detective Tutuola (Ice-T) investigates the crime but Raina refuses to delay the launch, and the cops must “level up” to protect her.

So, not sure why you started a topic and then decided the core topic matter was not up for discussion, but you done goofed, as they say, because until this thread is locked, it's about Gamergate.

Don't worry, though: every time we malign the sociopathic pack of donkey-caves that the average Gamegate enthusiasts consisted of, we'll make sure to pretend it's really about something else, like corruption in video game journalism, and make a really serious face when we do so.

You guys talk about it. I never said that I will stop the discussion on it. As I don't have that power to do so. But I will not be dragged into it, which hybrid was trying to do.

Though I agree with certain bits, but the show itself is just at that point where Its more annoying and as a game designer makes us look like toymakers... Than actual artists or people who work our asses off...

I hate hearing about gamergate. It makes me want to punch a wall.

Are there people still making enjoyable video games? Yes? Then who cares?

The corruption in game journalism makes me laugh though, as if that hasn't been a thing for decades already.

Anita Sarkesian (sp. to lazy to google) is a professional troll though. Managing to piss off this many people and make a lot of money off of the reactions is priceless. I thought it was funny that she called the police for threats that basically amounted to internet hate fantasy. You created the bed Anita, now lie in it.

For reference. I don't think this thread should include any discussion of Antia. As that only leads to just gak launchers all day.

Just like it's annoying to hear people try to pretend that GamerGate is about "harassment" and "stopping women in gaming", when it isn't. Or, really, when anyone says something as utterly clueless as the below quote:
