LHC Scientists attempting to make contact with a parallel universe w/c 30/03/15

Story:
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/565315/Scientists-at-Large-Hadron-Collider-hope-to-make-contact-with-PARALLEL-UNIVERSE-in-days

For the work blocked:

The staggeringly complex LHC ‘atom smasher’ at the CERN centre in Geneva, Switzerland, will be fired up to its highest energy levels ever in a bid to detect - or even create - miniature black holes.

If successful a completely new universe will be revealed – rewriting not only the physics books but the philosophy books too.

It is even possible that gravity from our own universe may ‘leak’ into this parallel universe, scientists at the LHC say.

The experiment is sure to inflame alarmist critics of the LHC, many of whom initially warned the high energy particle collider would spell the end of our universe with the creation a black hole of its own.

But so far Geneva remains intact and comfortably outside the event horizon.

Indeed the LHC has been spectacularly successful. First scientists proved the existence of the elusive Higgs boson ‘God particle’ - a key building block of the universe - and it is seemingly well on the way to nailing ‘dark matter’ - a previously undetectable theoretical possibility that is now thought to make up the majority of matter in the universe.

But next week’s experiment is considered to be a game changer.

Mir Faizal, one of the three-strong team of physicists behind the experiment, said: “Just as many parallel sheets of paper, which are two dimensional objects [breadth and length] can exist in a third dimension [height], parallel universes can also exist in higher dimensions.

“We predict that gravity can leak into extra dimensions, and if it does, then miniature black holes can be produced at the LHC.

"Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualised.

"This cannot be tested and so it is philosophy and not science.

“This is not what we mean by parallel universes. What we mean is real universes in extra dimensions.
“As gravity can flow out of our universe into the extra dimensions, such a model can be tested by the detection of mini black holes at the LHC.

“We have calculated the energy at which we expect to detect these mini black holes in ‘gravity's rainbow’ [a new scientific theory].

“If we do detect mini black holes at this energy, then we will know that both gravity's rainbow and extra dimensions are correct."

When the LHC is fired up the energy is measured in Tera electron volts – a TeV is 1,000,000,000,000, or one trillion, electron Volts

So far, the LHC has searched for mini black holes at energy levels below 5.3 TeV.

But the latest study says this is too low.

Instead, the model predicts that black holes may form at energy levels of at least 9.5 TeV in six dimensions and 11.9 TeV in 10 dimensions.

Scary stuff if you think about it.

Everett was widely derided, but his work has not been debunked, and it's fascinating to see it figures in the latest CERN experiments.

Multiverse theory with the LHC making gateways scares the crap out of me. Obviously I know next to nothing of physics but I always picture opening a link having a chance of being similar to a ship flooding compartment to compartment via open portcullis or opening a door into a building fire and getting the flashover. What if we access a universe full of matter or whatever that comes rushing through. In my head, I see this as a possible explanation of the big bang.
Seems as the big bang was a large enough explosion to be larger than light has managed to travel in however much time it has been traveling, I dont really want to be anywhere near people screwing around with the physics behind it (not that I have a choice).

On the other side, if they do manage to destroy our universe or atleast our planet, there wont be be any accountability for it, so lets throw caution to the wind and do some science!

Its about time we finally address the science-industrial welfare program. No other group of welfare queens get so many handouts from the government. Do you realize, since the 30s how much federal and state money has gone to these layabouts? They don't build bridges. They don't grow crops. They just sit around in their nice air conditioned labs "doing research." Yea we know what they're doing. They're doing us, average Joe sixpack taxpayer.

I say...two years of support then you're out! Get a job!

Now they're threatening to get my Boy. he always was pretty lazy, but now he's found out about this easy living gravy train too. Starting this summer my Boy, who once was a fine upstanding citizen, is going to be just a...science bum. He's too good for work. No he's going to help scientists "do research" into "mapping human protein contact points" so "we can fix all genetic diseases" blah blah more pie in the sky welfare nonsense. Get a job you layabouts!

Just on this one, i thought scientists were hard at work on the growing crops thing? Isn't monsanto famous for what they do in that field?

Back to the black hole, I'm no expect on black holes, but the idea of creating them doesn't strike me as a good idea. Yeah i see someone saying that hawking will shoot radiation at it to shut it down, but really? Its a bit like creating controlled nuclear energy, its all good until fukashima happens, or 3 mile island, or chernobyl, etc etc. We know the consequences of a nuclear disaster, are we trying to discover the consequences of a black hole disaster?

http://home.web.cern.ch/about/updates/2015/04/cern-researchers-confirm-existence-force

Researchers at the Large Hadron Collider just recently started testing the accelerator for running at the higher energy of 13 TeV, and already they have found new insights into the fundamental structure of the universe. Though four fundamental forces – the strong force, the weak force, the electromagnetic force and gravity – have been well documented and confirmed in experiments over the years, CERN announced today the first unequivocal evidence for the Force. “Very impressive, this result is,” said a diminutive green spokesperson for the laboratory.

“The Force is what gives a particle physicist his powers,” said CERN theorist Ben Kenobi of the University of Mos Eisley, Tatooine. “It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us; and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.”
Though researchers are as yet unsure what exactly causes the Force, students and professors at the laboratory have already started to harness its power. Practical applications so far include long-distance communication, influencing minds, and lifting heavy things out of swamps.
Kenobi says he first started teaching the ways of the Force to a young lady who was having trouble revising for her particle-physics exams. "She said that I was her only hope," says Kenobi. "So I just kinda took it from there. I designed an experiment to detect the Force, and passed on my knowledge."
Kenobi's seminal paper "May the Force be with EU" – a strong argument that his experiment should be built in Europe – persuaded the CERN Council to finance the installation of dozens of new R2 units for the CERN data centre*. These plucky little droids are helping physicists to cope with the flood of data from the laboratory's latest experiment, the Thermodynamic Injection Energy (TIE) detector, recently installed at the LHC.
"We're very pleased with this new addition to CERN's accelerator complex," said data analyst Luke Daniels of human-cyborg relations. "The TIE detector has provided us with plenty of action, and what's more it makes a really cool sound when the beams shoot out of it."
But the research community is divided over the discovery. Dark-matter researcher Dave Vader was unimpressed, breathing heavily in disgust throughout the press conference announcing the results, and dismissing the cosmological implications of the Force with the quip "Asteroids do not concern me".
Rumours are growing that this rogue researcher hopes to delve into the Dark Side of the Standard Model, and could even build his own research station some day. With the academic community split, many are tempted by Vader's invitations to study the Dark Side, especially researchers working with red lasers, and anyone really with an evil streak who looks good in dark robes.
"We hope to continue to study the Force, and perhaps use it to open doors with our minds and fly around and stuff," said TIE experimentalist Fan Buoi. "Right now, to be honest, I don't really care how it works. The theory department have some crackpot idea about life forms called midi-chlorians, but frankly I think that poorly thought out explanations like that just detract from how cool the Force really is."
With the research ongoing, many at CERN are already predicting that the Force will awaken later this year.
*Sources close to the Data Centre later revealed that these were not the droids they were looking for.
