Vehicles are named for fish, big suits for waves/weather. Little suits for their use(stealth and crisis, broadside plays on both use as multiple "big guns" and the naval aspect).

I always assumed that the stories also translated the Tau designations to the Imperial ones to make it easier for the reader to know what they are talking about. They have hooves, though - not feet - and their ancestors were more bovine than primate (compared to us).

Nato had silly names for the Warpac forces stuff and NATO stuff had "cool names".
(The nato codenames for Warpac things had Helicopters names starting with "H" - so we got "hip", "hind", "hokum", hetcetera.
